Need help deciding on my new Blueys!!!

Postby Zbiz » Fri Jun 08, 2007 6:55 am

Well finally finances are high enough to allow me to purchase my BLUEYS w000t :ohyes: lol. Yes plural blueys! I couldn’t decide which bluey species to get. So I decided to get 2 different ones to narrow down my choices. I believe my first choice is a northern but the second choice is up in the air. I figure I’ll get a bluey that has a different character than the northern… and I’m thinking one of the face eaters a tanimbar. I think these 2 species are on the opposites. One is big and sweet the other small and nasty. That way I get the best of both worlds. What do you guys think? If not the tanimbar I was thinking a IJ or a Indo. Soo many choices!

Well do you have a favorite ?, kinda silly question hey ..I love em all , Well It can make the whole experience alot smoother getting a reputable breeder . IMO a young pair of anything healthy . not brother and sister or twin . Have a really good look around .The time can be worth it as they hang out with you for a while

Good luck all the best

we cant tell u what to get, thats what u have to decide,id go with a pair of the same type though,or 2 pairs of 2 types, lol, but im an addict, lol, and u dont want them inbreeding between species, northerns are great ,i like the look and sound of tannibars, cant get them my self though as im australian but there a nice looking skink,as r ij,s and indos, what ever u choose u cant go wrong as im a sucker for all of them,as im sure most are as well,so go with your heart, but try to keep with in the same species, especially if planning on housing them together
good luck and post pics of what u get, would love to see them

I think that, perhaps, the reason some people have suggested getting two blueys of the same species is because it's so hard to tell a skink's gender. Unlike many other reptiles, their gender is often a mystery even when they're full grown. Buying two gives you a better chance of having a breeding pair when you are ready to try your hand at breeding.

If you do buy two different species and ARE able to figure out your pets' gender (ex: finding sperm plugs), going out and finding mates isn't nearly as easy as it sounds, especially compared to other reptiles. You can buy another young skink and raise it up in the hopes of it being the right gender. Adult skinks are available, though they're not always sexed and are more expensive. Breeding pairs of adults can be found as well, but for a high price. Though, sometimes, breeders will have surplus "proven" breeding stock available.

Another thing to keep in mind is the fact that each skink is unique and has its very own "skink-sonality". I have two northerns who are both very different from each other.

Whatever you decide, Good Luck!

Welcome to the forum!

I would say Northern ALL THE WAY. I'd probably get a few Northerns. Easterns are a tie with my tanimbars. Then a Merauke, IJ and lastly an Indonesian. I just love Tanimbars - especially if they tame.

Good luck with your research.
