Well...

Postby Cypython » Wed Jun 13, 2007 5:29 pm

Saturday was the reptile show in Hamburg PA. I went in there looking for a blue tongue but lo did they try to temp me. Almost every other table had ball pythons of almost every size and color. (if you read my intro post, you will know I used to own a ball python.) Slightly did I waver but I kept my resolve to find a blue tongue and not buy another ball python.

After going through the whole show, I found three people that had blue tongues. One had two large ones, much older than I was looking for. And another guy had a two month old but it was a breed I had not heard of. I can not remember the name but it began with "G". That one was a bit skinny. The third guy had about twelve three week old Northerns. They seemed to be in good shape, they were all active and exploring the tank. I walked away and thought about it for a bit and was going to walk out without anything. But I made one fatal mistake. That was going back to the guy with the Northerns and asking to handle one. :)

While checking the skink's eyes, nose, appendages, and tail, I realized the darn thing was too *darn cute. I decided to take him(her) home. The guy had no idea about the sex of the animal, which does not bother me because I am not looking to go into breeding, I just want a pet. So with the sex unknown I decided on a non gender specific name.

Allow me to introduce my new blue tongue skink: Enigma

He(I have been referring to it as a he.) likes to bury himself in the aspen and stay there. Though when I put him back in his cage after handling him, he runs around for a bit and then goes right back to burying himself. I have enough aspen in the tank at the moment that he totally disappears and to find him, I have to look at the underside of the tank. (Guess who is getting a little less aspen in the tank when I redo it after the first cleaning. :P ) Is this normal skink behavior? Also trying to get him used to me so he does not keep hissing when I pick him up. I will keep you guys updated on his and my progress. :D

Sorry for taking so long to post but I have not had the time till now.

What a cutie! Love the name too!

I have 2 adults and they still huff and hiss a little when I pick them up. It's just a normal thing I think. So is burying themselves. If mine aren't out I can usually find them by the running my hand gently over the aspen and listening for the hissing. Do you have a hide for him? That's "usually" where mine decide to stay alot of the time.
Avatars are like shoes to me. Even though I can only wear one pair at a time, I always have a closet full!

did he say GIGAS? AKA indo....i think.

congrats on the new baby...what a cutie,That behavior is normal. Hes probably just getting used to his new home. I would leave the extra aspen in there just until he settles down.

How are the temps in there? might want to cheack that aswell

Thanks gang for all the encouragement. :D

And to answer all the questions:

Blotch:  That sounds just SO wrong.

Shellyjean: Yep I have a hide for him. It is a 12 inch long "Y" shaped piece of PVC pipe. So far he has run through it a few times to get to the other side of the tank. Hopefully he will figure it out at some point. :)

Justan and Lucifer_Spades: The breeder might have said Gigas or Guinea. Truthfully I don't remember and did not think to write it down.

Leigh: Oh yes Leigh, I read the caresheet fully before even deciding to get a Blue tongue skink. The info in there helped me make the choice on which new pet to get. :)

Zbiz: The only reason I found the Northerns that the guy I bought Enigma from had, was I asked him if he had any blue tongues. They were in a tank at the top of his display rack. If I had not asked, I would not have spotted them on my own truthfully.

And I promise to keep you guys updated on Enigma with pics every now and again.

Thanks again all,
Cypython
