Check out the third "Distinguishing marks" part, and click the "1" and the "2" -- I can't seem to copy image location here on the campus computers.

Those pictures show the two extremes of Indo and Merauke tails. You will see everything in between (along with other attributes) that contribute to making the Indo/Merauke distinction fairly difficult at times. We often call them "in between" specimens because they don't have a purely striped tail, but don't have a solidly marked tail either but a little of both. This is because so many wild animals are brought over from Indonesia -- the far east have the purest looking Indos, the far west has the cleaner, bigger Merauke, and in the middle we get a little of both.

I've looked at a million pictures, and it's still hard! The hardest ID'ing for me is the lowland/alpine blotched differentiation.

I would agree with you there zach - I swear i have a couple of alpines but richard and colin have told me they are all lowlands - possibly a couple of cross's in there. Either way - I love my guys!!!

Not all Alpines have the (speckled) faces - granted the easiest to identify have bright yellow blotches with a predominantly black body, but then head size and shape comes into play - location - ugh! it's not the easiest unless you have the Stereotypical Alpine!

Richard showed me a pic of one of his alpines and it had alot in common with a couple of my supposed lowlands - so go figure. :noknow:

I dont appear to be allergic to Mamma.....yet anyway.
