Can O Snails

Can O Snails

Hey guys, I don't have any snails where i live, but i was looking to adding a few snails to Mr. Skank's diet.
1. Are can o snails a good alternative to live ones?
2. What are your opinions on this subject?
My BTS can read. (I think)

I used to feed the can o snails and didnt have a problem with them. They were still moist and looked "fresh". Nelson didnt have a problem with them either, he ate them just like he did on live snails.

They are fine, jsut not as good as real snails, because they are lacking the shell, the calcium part lol.

What do they use as a preservative ,if anything?that would be my only concern

Petsmart lets me go around with a net and clean out the unwanted pond snails from their tanks when I ask. They said sure the first time, and every time a clerk looks confused when I ask I just mention that they let me last time and I get the go ahead.

They never charge me, and managers have actually thanked me while walking by.

Just be careful when you go to a Petco/PetSmart type store to get snails....their associates are told that snails are for fish tanks and ponds only, not to be sold as feeders and will often times refuse to sell you them if tell them it is for food.

I've mentioned to all my people that it was to feed my skink, and they were just interested. Weird that some would care why you want them. Why would anyone mind the difference as long as they are out of their tanks?

I would just say you are putting them in a small tank or something.

I was told two different things...one was that PetSmart/Petco does not sell live feeder animals with the exception of the feeder fish and feeder insects....their rodents, ornamental fish, etc are supposed to be pets only and their snails fall under that category. The other reason is that if an animal were to get injured eating a snail due to it's shell there is a lawsuit risk. When I worked for PetSmart we had to refuse mice sales most commonly because they wanted them as feeders and would complain that we didn't sell feeder mice. We even refused a dove sale because the guy thought it would be 'neat' to see what his Burmese python would do to it.
