ok, so this might sound a little weird, but my sister blew up some easy mac the other day, and there was smoke everywhere.


my question is, if there is smoke, like oh no, i burnt something in the oven smoke, not oh no, the house is on fire, smoke, could it give them lung damage? or are they hardy enough to withstand it a little?


im asking for future reference. lol you cant trust my sis! (the whole house still smells like burnt macaroni!!:tired: ) but nothing was damged. currently we are laughing about it!

so thats my question. (i don't have him yet, but i would like to know for future reference)

When I lived in DC, the school had a fire. Luckly the section that I taught in only had smoke damage so all of my animals where fine. Other then the fact that Frankie ended up living in my bathtube for a while because the only door her cage fit through was where the fire was she was fine. So I'm guessing since a big fire didn't harm her and little smoke from Mac and Cheese isn't going to do big time damage. Your sister might want to try not to burn it to often though.

I don't think it'll hurt her, but if you're worried you can always lay a wet towel over the screened parts of her cage. I do that for my fish tank when I have to bug bomb the house (the reptiles just come on a "vacation" in the car with me for a few hours). Its worked thus far.

On that note, I should mention that I think its a great idea to have "escape bags" near the cages in easily accessible places. I took pillow cases and made the tops into draw string closure so that all I have to do is toss the bluey in, pull the strings, and run.

Fire preparedness and animals is so key. No one ever thinks about it until it's too late.

I have a custom, portable cage for Hazumi with water bottle, food and everything she needs, just grab her and go.

Rollie has his zipper bag with Jenn's custom sleeper, I can figure out food and details later. It'd take less than 2 minutes to pack them up and get out.

I have a fire alert sticker on my door (although I worry it might advertise for theft too.) Each of my herps has a box/bag near the cage. I don't have food or anything else ready. I figure I'd be doing good just to get my kids out and then collect my pets. Thought that I was the only one who planned for such things. Reading about Andrew's fire prompted me to make emergency plans. I am assuming fire fighters won't rescue reptiles unless the fire/smoke risk is minimal. Anyone know?

We practice fire drills with the kids. I am always fearful they will stop and get the animals that we now have a routine for them as well, i have my old snake bags next to each reptile tank, just grab, drop them in and run. I can get everyone out of the house when it is pitch black in under 90 seconds.

Good topic....who actually has a fire escape plan for their BTS? Since we have ten, my plan has always been to throw them all in a 20 gallon and run away, and that's if I had no time.

All of them together! Mine would eat each other!!! My guys have their sleeping bags by there cages but I like Jen's idea with the draw string so I think I'm going to make them their own emergency bags with them. My worry is having enough time to get all 8 of them and the 8 cats out.

I have a sack next to Quigly's cage, I figure I can grab him and open my dogs kennel(my dog will just about follow me anywhere) on my way up to get my kids, we have "Save Our Pets" stickers on our outer windows and all of our pets descriptions and their favorite hiding spots are listed. It's not enough in my opinion but I don't think there is much else we could do.

I figure the skinks will be easy since they are all in the basement. I just have to grab them and pop them in their bags. My worry is getting the three foster cats that also live in the basement into their cages (which they hate!). I'd have to get them out and then get my three (who aren't so fond of their cages either) and then find the two kittens that I'm fostering. Luckly they don't mind their cage! On adoption day it can take me up to a half hour to get all the cats into their cages and that's without scary fire happening!

You'd be alot better throwing them into a big sack. I can make you a couple if you'd like. Its way less cumbersome than trying to wrangle BTS into a tank, and it'd be easier to run with. You can figure out housing and food etc after danger has passed. Its scary thinking about this kind of thing, but since we have to be prepared for the worst it is necessary. If I were you I'd probably throw 5 in each bag and run. I might also store some old strips of towel in there so they aren't laying right on top of each other. Might help to ward off any arguments in transit.....

Jenn, I hate to say it, but if you prop a window open, you'd save your life and the cats', most likely.

If it's a matter of life and death between cooked kitty and escaped kitty, you can always try and find them later. They'll find their way out.

whats your view on that, your in a rush and the house is burning and you still have that lovely taipan or something, what then?

Yeah, I wouldn't have time to gather 10 BTS and put them in individual tubs then carry them all out!

Jen, a sack would definitely be a lot easier and less cumbersome.
