hibernation help / advice

Postby nat_the_brat » Thu Nov 22, 2007 11:08 am

hello everyone, I haven't been very active on here due to life, etc ha ha but I now have a question about my blueys. I have two and they have both been brumating for several weeks now. I went to go check on them today to discover that both had dirty water in their rubbermaids. One had knocked their water over and now has damp shavings and the other had made a huge poopey mess in their water and spread it al over the rubbermaid.

I had to take both of them out and put in new shavings as I can't let them sit in a damp cold rubbermaid but I am wondering if I should put water back in. I am getting so much conflicting advice about hibernating them (some places state water should always been prodvided, others don't). so I am just wondering what your guy's advice is since I know there are some veteran bluey keepers here.

thanks!

I leave my water dishes in all winter and my whole crew brumates. What you might want to do is switch to a smaller water dish or not fill the ones you have as full that way if they do spill it, things don't get as wet.

I would put less water in and try to secure the water dish. You might want to check them a little more frequently as well. That said, this is my first time trying to brumate a bluey so I am definitely not an expert here!

As the objective would be a good clean drink of water seems like it would make sense to reduce the size of the dish and the amount of water in it. Water sports would probably be better served after the long winters nap.

I keep water in at all times. I would try reducing the amount.

Oh good plan. Hey would a bluey use a hanging water bottle?

At some pet stores I've seen lizards drinking from hamster bottles, and a BTS is smart enough to learn how. Otherwise, I'd try for a heavy, steady water dish so that it can't be tipped, and only fill it a bit.

Part of the reason for the water dishes is so they can walk through them and take a bath if they want to. That couldn't happen with just a water bottle.

Of course under regular circumstances I would always have a water dish. I wondered if during brunation, when you were away for a few days or with a skink that likes to pooh in their water if the bottle would be another option for clean water. Good to have a fully loaded arsenal ... no?

Jenn, this is just for the brumation period, when they pop out for a drink then go back to ground, do they take regular bathes at this time then,I didn't think so?In normal mode, mine gets a small dish to drink from and a large stilted one as a bath and hide combo.
