I think most of the hoopla with reptiles and salmonella is mostly stemmed from turtles because I believe there is a much higher rate of salmonella in turtles (not tortoises).

Yes, because they were often fed raw chicken in the farms where they are bred, back when baby turtles were a huge craze and still legal.
