Twas the night before Christmas, when inside my house,
Three creatures were stirring, beginning to rouse.
From the stockings I'd hung by the chimney with care,
Popped the head of a lizard who'd been sleeping there.
These herps had been nestled all snug in their beds,
While thoughts of Christmas snails danced in their heads,
I'd just gone to bed in my PJs and cap,
Not seeing my friends waking up from their nap.
When from downstairs there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Away down the staircase I flew like a flash,
Into the herp room I moved at a dash.
There tangled up in a string of fake snow,
Was Pryce, caught up after leaping below.
Then, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But little Wocket, who I'd come to revere.
With him came another, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be young Trikks.
More rapid than eagles his saviors they came,
And he whistled and shouted, and called out their names.
"Oh Wocket! I'm caught! I've gotten quite stuck!
Oh Trikks! Please help me! I feel like such a schmuck!
I climbed up my porch, and over my wall!
Please save me! I wasn't expecting to fall!"
They asked one another "since we can not fly,
How are we going to get up that high?"
Wocket looked side to side, thinking what could they do?
Trikks looked up and down, soon seeing a clue.
They climbed Pryce's tank, right onto the roof,
And took a peek off the edge, down at the goof.
I watched this in awe, but as Trikks turned around,
He slipped off the edge, fell straight for the ground.
His saving grace was Pryce's left foot,
Which he managed to catch, then had to stay put.
Wocket was scared, but there was no turning back,
So he went for my gifts stacked on top of the rack.
He grabbed a box saying "May your holidays be merry"
Inside, for my mother, a chocolate covered cherry.
He dragged the gift to the edge, unraveled the bow,
And lowered the ribbon to those stuck down below.
Pryce caught the ribbon between his sharp teeth,
Trikks kept a tight hold, dangling underneath.
Wocket pulled with his all, slid back on his belly,
But his might was fading, his muscles turning to jelly.
It was at this point I came back to my self,
Ran over and picked up my three little elfs.
They were startled and confused, twisting their heads.
Discovery had filled them with a sharp sense of dread.
Now that I'd seen them I'd messed up their work,
For with humans they weren't to talk, laugh or smirk.
So I gave each a kiss on the tip of their nose,
And promised I would let nobody know.
I tucked them all back into their beds,
And watched as they lay down their wee weary heads.
But I heard them exclaim, as I walked out of sight,
"Happy Christmas, Mom, and have a good-night."
A rewrite of "Night Before Christmas" by Clement Clarke Moore. Maybe not up to his standards, but I had fun with it. Pryce spent the time cuddling against my back. My holidays are looking bright and skink-filled. Hope every one of you has a good holiday, whether it be with family, friends, skinks, or in Iraq. Be happy and be safe. Merry Cowmas, and a happy Moo-Year!

HAPPY CHRISTMAS! If anyone is into beer here, you MUST try out the Winter's Bourbon Cask Ale. "Ale aged on bourbon barrel oak with vanilla beans". REALLY GOOD! We found it at Safeway..
Sounds good.
