I have a secret. I only wore the yellow PPE when hand feeding birds once a week. I found that when I wore them every time I handfed, the birds become imprinted on the PPE. They also became imprinted on the green (now blue) uniforms, so I would take that off and just feed in random tshirts.

Wow you FED your birds?

I mean... *cough*

We wore these strange paper bibs. Actually, I wore it. No one else could feed the birds properly besides myself and this sweet kid named Matt. I regimented the lesser jerks working there to stick with scooping hamster pee in the litter. And feeding the little jerks. I hate hamsters. Expensive snake food.

Everyone who has worked at a pet store hates hamsters.
The only ones I will tolerate are the Chinese.

Weaning the baby birds was my favorite part of the job. I love raising a baby bird so it is socialized and finds a good home. Its a great feeling when a mean, nasty bird comes in, and you worry that it will spend a miserable life in Petsmart, only to tame it and then it goes home with a loving family. I would not sell to people who refused to get rid of their teflon, or anyone who smoked.

What moron would admit they smoke when you asked. Do they think you're just asking them if they smoke so you can bum a cigarette off them?

For a moment Nomad, there I thought you were talking about feeding wild birds!
I had to wear a hand puppet that looked like the adult and sort of "hide" myself when I was feeding baby birds. Mostly with raptors though. They got forsters with adults whenever possible. It was fun! I love birds!

I'm not exactly a bird person, but what is so tough about feeding them?

Hamsters really weren't my favorite creatures for a while. I had a good one when I was a kid, but of course because it was nice, it was smited with an awful bout of cancer because of it's unnaturalness.

I grew up with birds. A lot of them. Feeding, raising and cleaning was never a big deal. The noise? I couldn't ever get over the noise.

Our PetSmart had a mini/severe macaw that I liked quite a bit. When the store was closed I'd break all the rules and let him follow me around while I fed the fish. His wings were clipped but he sure liked that, walking around. He was one of those "biters" that convinced me he needed help getting over it. I wish I knew what happened to him. I named him "Fingers." When people asked me why, I told them it was because he has had so many of them. Well, I only told that to the people I didn't like.

I used to do the same thing with our birds haha. After closing, depending on the manager closing, I would let my favorite conures follow me around, after I cleaned the floor of course. Socialization is key with birds.

I like to make fun of them (the birds) to their face (beak) and call them stupid pigeons or that I am going to roast them because they look like chickens, then scoop them up and have a nice play session.

My favorite bird was an umbrella cockatoo, Diamond, and at night I would have to put her to sleep by rocking her on her back in my arms like a baby. The whole time I would baby talk her mean things about barbeque sauce, etc.

I used to come in on my days off to put her to sleep beacuse she would scream if I wasn't there to say goodnight.

I'm sure the future owners would love that. You'd end up having to make housecalls until they became the "mommies."

Man am I glad I don't own birds... I look at them like children and dogs: I'm thankful they're not mine, and I can go home without them.

Haha. She wound up being sold to a retired woman, which is a good home for a cockatoo, they really need to be in a home with someone all day.

It took weeks to ween her off of the night time ritual.
