Shipping Reptiles?

Postby jasjmm27 » Tue Jan 08, 2008 10:21 am

Ok, so I have run into a roadblock trying to ship an animal to a friend of mine, it seems that there are two choices:

1) They don't ship reptiles.

2) It must be business to business and through a "qualified reptile shipper".

Does anyone know of a more friendly way to ship animals within the US? I have looked at Fedex, UPS, and Delta Dash and it seems I would be unable to use any of those for a simple one time shipment?

Any help/references would be useful.

Ok, so I have found that for Fedex there may be a 3 week process I can go through to get certified as a reptile shipper...that is a little more then I need at the moment...

Does anyone know any herp breeders/dealers in the Phoenix/Tucson area (prefer PHX) that might be willing to help me ship an animal?

UPS ships animals through the air system. You must pack them properly, indicate orientation arrows and at a minimum, put the species name in latin on the outside of the box.

They are not responsible for loss of life, only the value of the contents, if damaged or late.

For best and safest results, use Next Day Air and pay attention to weekends, holidays and ultimately, weather/temperature of both your city and destination.

Check with Zach on shipping methods, the above is just a breakdown of basic UPS policy and ideas.

Thanks a lot! So, this could be done by an "individual" and not a reptile business then? Everything I was reading stated that it must be a business or similar though I have been making some headway into learning how to apply for the ability to ship via fedex.

I will look into UPS more and see what Zach has to say. :)

It seems everyone here has had good luck with UPS so far, that is interesting since most of the other sites I have checked all tend to shy away from them due to rough handling, etc. At any rate, it is good to know I have options and that UPS might be easier!

Write the species name, as required, but do it in small letters, near the edges so it is not noticeable. Some people see "live reptile" as "handle very roughly..."
