Postby Thehurricane22 » Fri Jan 11, 2008 12:34 pm

Well i finally took some pics, their alright, although as u see Lenny is hiding right now and doesn't look like he wants to be bothered :-P. I am still going to add more into the cage, like some plants, and some other things, I just am broke right now after all this :-P. So this cage isn't final, but its just something for him to have fun with right now. Well tell me what u think :D.

I personally wouldn't use sand for risk of impaction. Check out the caresheet for good info on appropriate substrates!

The big thing is Do Not feed on sand or dirt. I also dislike it because of how it gets everywhere, but the danger comes from impaction if eaten. If you feed on sand, the BTS is nearly guaranteed to eat some sand. Bad.

What is it you have on the water dish side? Reptibark?

Is that slate on the left side rear standing at an angle? If it is it may be a hazard if lenny bumps into it or burrows near it. I'd hate for it to fall on him.
My BTS can read. (I think)

I have a food dish i put the food in for him to eat, so he shouldn't be eating any sand, unless he likes the taste of it :-P. The water dish i got in there for now is on coconut bark, the guy at the store said it would be fine for him, is it alright for him? The rock slabs i have leaning up are secure, i got them lodged underneath the rock in front of them, he likes to crawl back there and lay behind them; makes him feel like he's hiding :-P. I'm going to be taking him out tomorrow to sit with me for a while, he seems pretty content with me so far, so I hope all goes well :-P. Thanks for the replies to my post guys.

Lookin good. I would be worried about sand as others have said and anything that could fall on him. Your bluey is really cute!

I dont see a UV lamp, or is that a compact florry, and does it bring the basking area temps up to around the 100f mark. The coconut husk looks, and is great. If you intend to leave the sand in there, make sure you dont feed things that will encourage your skink to take mouthfulls of sand while eating, its safer to remove it but my understanding is that as long as he isnt playing JCB's and it cant stick to his food, its not life threatening.

The lamp on the right is the UVB lamp. It's the lamp that lasts for like a year and provides with him with heat and uvb rays. T basking temp if he's on or right by the rock is 95 degrees and above, depending on where exactly he is.

To be honest, for something the size of a BTS, I don't see sand as an impaction risk. However, it is heavy, hard to clean, and gets smelly easily, and is a poor absorber of moisture.

well, one good way to tell if it is a major impaction risk is if the sand clumps and hardens when it is when, or at least that is the way it is with beardies, i imagine it is the same for BTS

Luckily, BTS are normally not fed live food that they have to chase down, most are fed off a plate. Thus a big mouthful of sand is rare for them.

yea thats true...but i would be afraid they would take a little at a time if they licked the sand, or even if they knocked food off their plate.
IMO, i dont think you should use sand.
But you can do whatever

No, I wouldn't recommend it either. However, I don't feel it is a real danger, just annoying and inconvenient.
