Parents met Smoot

Postby Graniteer » Sat Jan 19, 2008 6:54 pm

So, my parents came and saw Smoot today. It was pretty funny. My mom was wondering how he breathed, she thought it's ears were gills. My dad just really dislikes reptiles and woudln't even look at it straight. He seems pretty quiet today though, just really slow and he's been sleeping a lot. He hasn't brumated or anything yet, maybe it's a late bloomer? Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

Have you ever asked your Dad why he's got such an aversion? Like did he have a bad experience or see a scary movie when he was a kid or something?

I sent both of my parents framed pictures of Ping for Christmas. They have no choice but to hang them up since they're from their offspring.

Hahaha thats cute, when my mum saw my easterns ears shes was like :?

And my dad hates them, doesnt have any bad experiences with them...
just the fact that LIZARDS and staying inside the house
Even when he see's me holding them he would say " what the hell are u doing carrying them around " but you know, dads are dads!

As long as you love them and are willing to take care of them, your parents will be happy that they have nothing to do them

Its just alien to me to fear, or be disgusted by a lizard, and I am curious as to whether these dads/men have a specific reason for it!?

Tony had almost no experience with lizards at all until he met me, and he just loves them. He loves animals anyways, so I guess thats a head start.

I'm always trying to analyze and figure out what makes people do the things they do, or fear the things they do.
Is it a childhood thing?

My dad just isnt an animal person in general. Even though he doesnt admit it often, you can really tell that he loves the family dogs though. He has never understood my addiction to animals.

My mom on the other hand, has always enjoyed the dogs and would love to have more (they have 3). She doesnt mind the reptiles. She will handle them, take care of them if I stayed the night at a friends house when I lived at home. Until recently, she had no desire to own a reptile. Then my younger brother bought home a veiled chameleon. My mom is in LOVE with it. She has even made the comment that she would like to have one! It shocked the crap out of me. Needless to say, her birthday is coming up

I have no idea where he came up with his general dislike of reptiles. He thought Smoot looked like a snake. It took him 6 years before he admitted he liked our first dog. He's kind of tough softie. I like to think he's alright with the lizards, he just doesn't want to show it. My mom liked Smoot though, she even petted it.

My mum and Dad both love Garry and Jak-and will both steal them from me for a cuddle! it's quite annoying sometimes!
When I went away with my mum and brother for a few days, I had my dad on the phone "I've been holding Jak most of the day-he seemed cold-should i take him to bed with me?" This is especially hilarious because my dad is NOT in general an animal person! At all!

Many folks have a strong aversion to snakes and bts resemble them. I think there is some sort of connection there.

I find it so difficult to understand what people can find so bad about any animal that they can't even look at it. If it were a clown however, it would be understandable

My mum doesn't like either of my reptiles at all, and i'm living with her :(
She won't even let Till walk around the lounge because she'd feel the need to clean everywhere he'd walked..
Although this isn't all bad, because it has ment my parents are seriously looking into converting the garage into a reptile house, with an appartment above it so they don't have to put up with me in the house either

It's sweet when people take an interest, like your mum did, though. :)

I always expect people to react in a negative way and I'm quite surprised when they don't. We all are so used to seeing each other's bluey pics and we appreciate how cute they can be. We know how they have cute personalities and bright eyes when they're curious. But "outsiders" don't get it.

 Hahaha,
Clowns. . . Didja read that article on BBC about Clown in Children's hospital, I guess they did a study on whether clowns helped, and they found that they increased anxiety in the kids because they're "unknowable"
Not scared of 'em, just always thought they were stupid and not funny.

I agree, Blueys do resemble snakes, so it must be fear transferred. My uncle is terrified of snakes, I chased him around the dining table with a garter snake when I was 8. I just wanted him to hold it!

Most people who dislike my blueys say it is because they look "snakey." That is when I show off the stubby legs and blue tongue.

My hubby claims not to be an animal person but he has begun sneaking the blueys out for holds!!!!

Last week, two Mormons came to our door and I met them with Latte' in hand. I have never seen them so disinterested in witnessing to anyone... :nono:

I've found that kids are the most accepting of blueys. I volunteer to take them to libraries/schools every time I can.

I hung lizards from my earlobes as a child. I also got bitten by a swift that hung on til there was blood. I still love lizards but my sister (who witnessed these encounters) pays neighborhood kids to kill them.

Pay neighborhood kids to kill sister?

Mom likes that she can tell people we have lizards, Dad ignores them completely.

I find the lizards get a warmer reception than the snake by far. Still, most kids love either, and are happy to show the lizards to parents. I live showing them off to the kids. Take them out often to anywhere I can find younger people.
