I have some photos of a water dragon with conjunctivitis, I'll post them when I get home tonight (don't have them on my laptop).

There's often confusion on exactly what conjunctivitis is. It's a symptom of an eye infection, but note that not all eye infections will present with conjunctivitis.

The conjunctiva are the pinkish, moist tissues around the eyes, under the eyelids (pull your eyelid down in front of a mirror to get an idea of exactly where the tissue is). When these are infected, they redden and swell up, making the entire eye look kind of puffy. This can occur in one or both eyes.

There's some confusion if it's only the rostral (closest to the nose) part of the "conjunctiva." The Harderian gland (tear gland) or the nictating membrane (third eyelid) can prolapse, looking a lot like conjunctivitis. I've seen lizards with a foreign object under the third eyelid that looked a lot like conjunctivitis to the owner.

Can you post a pic or describe Hershal's eyes? What exactly makes you think he may have an eye infection?

Herp, someone on here said that he has conjuctivitis. Then someone else said an eye infection .. so I have no clue! :)

Okay, In the morn, Hershal can not open his eyes. (Later on in the day they are wide open)

Under and above his eye (eye lids?), are crusty looking, but is not really moist, more dry/kinda moist texture ....

That is about it.

We have an vet appontment next week some time.

hahaha - that's funny!

I had conjuctivitis when i was a kid. One minute I was fine the next it felt like I got hit in the face with a cricket bat and i couldn't see. Doctor told me that it's rare for that to happen, but it does. Doesn't mean anything, it's apparently just the bodies reaction to it. I tell you what, It totally felt like i got hit by a bat.

medical terms

Postby aggiegirl » Mon Jan 28, 2008 7:13 pm

Conjunctiva is the tissue involved. "itis" just denotes inflammation. As Geoff says, the inflammation is usually due to an infection (bacterial or viral.) The inflammation could also be due to irritation (foreign body, allergy, etc.) It is less of an actual diagnosis than a physical description of symptoms...

Right on, aggiegirl. Conjunctivitis is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

Here is the promised pic...

Image

Wicked eye infection in a GWD rescue. This was after I pulled woodchips (that reeked of feces) from under (yes, under) her eyelids.

Diagnosing via the Internet is next to impossible. It's possible that the crustiness is just excess moisture, although to me it seems a bit unlikely. The vet will be able to tell you for certain if anything is abnormal with Hershal's eyes :)

I'm personally not sure what the discussion is anymore. It's clear that a vet visit is needed, we've all said it. You can't diagnose something without physically seeing the animal, however you can give possibilities and dangers if left untreated like geoff and myself have done and also most other posters to this thread.

The Skink needs to see a vet.

Woah. Yuck!

Hershal's eyes look NOTHING like your WD eyes ... maybe his eyes are just dry or something.

I have a vet app next week. :)
