Please help .. shed REALLY stuck on!

Postby BlueyBabe » Wed Jan 30, 2008 5:34 pm

I'v tried to get Hershal's shed off his toes. Today I soaked him in the bath tub for about 10 min or more .. I tryed to get the shed off with my finger nail .. but it didn't budge ....

When I got home from school .. I went into my room to put my books on my bed .. and I see Hershal bitting at his toes. I swear there are a few lesser toes now .. I wonder if he has chewed some off ...?

What else should I try to do? Should I let him soak longer?

Thanks for the help .. (Sorry for posting So many Threads)

He could have bit his toes off. I would try soaking him longer, 20 to 30 minutes. Some pointed tweesers and very, very gently try to remove it after the soak.

I use a tooth pick to get the stuck shed off of toes. Soak for about 20 minutes in warm water, then slide the tooth pick gently between the toes and pull it off slowly. Good luck!

I let my guys soak for alot longer than that!

So far I've got one of my guys currently in the bath and he's been there almost 30 mins, and i plan to leave him there for a little longer. They poop in the bath and it's easy to clean up, plus the shed comes off quicker. Each to their own though. if you are really worried - go get some shed ease from a pet store. It'll help he shed come off if the soaking is not working.

how deep water do you leave them in? just enough to cover the feet? to the belly? just above the back?

just above the back - but at the deepest end they are able to keep their heads out of the water. the bath has a deep and shallow end.

stuck shed

Postby valentyt » Thu Jan 31, 2008 10:45 am

I have this problem with one of my leos. On her website, Melissa Kaplan recommends soaking in warm water then applying mineral oil to the stuck shed. After a day or two of this (in my leos case 3-4 days) you can gently work the skin off with a fingernail. I've never had to use this on a BTS but her advice is general for all lizards in this particular case, so it should work. Mineral oil is a lot cheaper and easier to get than any of the shedding aids. Here is a link to her page on shedding: http://www.anapsid.org/shedding.html Check out the sections on problem sheds and shed-aids.

Hope this helps. :)
