Need some advice on my viv setup

Postby The Londoner » Tue Jan 29, 2008 5:35 am

Hi all I got my viv and all the bits for it yesterday have set it up hope I have done it right?.
I have got a nice log hide in the middle towards the back and have part of it covered by plants so that it is between the cooler and warm area I have the water bowl and food bowl in the cool area and in the warm area a nice rock for baskin on and a UV light does that sound right? Also I have a heat mat my viv is glass so where do I put it under the viv like I have read online or at the backside of the viv I am confused on that one.
I know I can relie on you guys to put me right because you all love and care for your skinks so well :puzzled: Sue

Hey sue, there is a section in the care sheet about viv set ups, I personaly dont use a heat mat but ive heard that its best if you place the mat under the tank apossed to in the tank as the mat can get very very hot and burn your skink/lizard. Also it will ad protective padding on the bottom of the glass, stopping it cracking under pressure/weight of the tank/rock etc

Nah, you don't need a heat mat unless your house just gets frigid at night. My skinky likes his hide on the cool end of his tank and I might recommend that so he's not forced to choose between hiding and getting too hot.

As long as it is above 60 at night, you are fine.

If you are worried about night temps getting too cold why not get a dome fixture and put a low wattage black light in it. That way the skink will be save, warm and not disturbed by visible light. :D

I use a 50w night glow light (only cost about £5, maybe less) for the evening, looks great when looking at him during the night and it dose keep the tempature up, i keep it on the thermostate so i can keep the temp constant
