vivarium too big?

Postby nivek5225 » Fri Feb 01, 2008 7:10 pm

I am planning on getting a blue tongue skink as a baby. Is it better to get a smaller vivarium for a baby? Or would it be better to just get an adult sized vivarium(50 gallons or so)? If im gonna end up getting a bigger viv once the skink is an adult should i just get it when its a baby, or is it better to get a smaller viv for a baby?

Go for the good stuff bigger is always better and the baby will grow fast enough to fill it.

For BTS bigger is generally better. However, remember that as a baby, they're small and scared, and such a huge area can be frightening. Go big, but fill it, and I mean fill it, with fake plants and other things they can hide in. They'll get a huge amount of room and they'll feel safe ^.^

Fatal_S is correct, save yourself some money and just buy a large enclosure for your little one, but fill it. The plants idea was good, and make more than one retreat for him or her.

My baby is currently in a 15 gallon tank. He's only five inches long right now. I'm going to get him his full sized tank when he gets about 7-9 inches long. Then I'll use the 15 gallon as a back up/emergency/place-to-put-skink-while-cleaning-tank tank. It wouldn't hurt to start big though, but anything less than 15 gallons probably won't last long.
