Eggs are a little different as they are enclosed. I suppose one would just need to be aware of hormones, etc if they were concerned about that.

I would say buy free range or organic, but I know how Steve feels about that!

Actually all I'm going to say is that I'm pretty sure the bacteria and chemicals that might spice up roadkill is not too natural either ;)

It still is a semi-permeable membrane. So, even though it is enclosed, doesnt mean it would be safe.

It's different in the sense that while spraying blood off the floors, it doesn't spray INTO an egg like it does on meat. Big difference. Nothing that comes from an animal is 100% safe -- we can take precautions though.

Steve -- obviously. Naturally decaying animals are still in a different ballpark than human-run slaughterhouses.

Actually - use extreme caution in where every one is sourcing meat to give to blueys - I hear it on good authority that feeding meat with Sulphur dioxide (one of the most commonly used preservatives that makes meat appear bright red) is one of the quickest ways to kill a bluey, however apparently it is not used in good quality tinned cat food cos cats are also extremely sensitive to it.

I have fed Blue beef in the past,it was first a couple of little chunks from a steak I had(all fat removed)and cooked medium- well done, this was refused point blank. The second time it was raw and he nearly took my finger tips off, I' prefer to offer live feeders and the steak was an experiment, chicken was taken raw or cooked (I only offer cooked now), I'd imagine that there were a few contaminantes on road kill, think petrol/diesel fumes.
MMMmmmmm... Something???????

Preservatives, additives...all that artificial crap is a good enough reason for me. I haven't heard that though that it would specifically kill a bluey - where did you hear that?

A breeder informed me that he had fed baby blueys with diced meat purchased from a convenience store and killed an entire batch of babies in one go.

He had others that were fed with meat that was presumably contaminated with Sulphur Dioxide - the blueys suffered loss of apetite, wasting, lethergy and eventual death.

It is unfortunately common practice for convenience stores, supermarkets, market stall holders etc to spray meat with SO2.

He also referred to an article written on the issue ie. through a herp society - I'll investigate further and get the details.

When I feed raw meat to my guys (dogs and blueys alike) I prefer to go to the butcher and purchase meat there. A lot of the small scale butchers process the animals themselves (from alive to cut) and you don't have all the scary stuff that can happen in the commercial plants.

That being said, there is a lot of propoganda about how terrible commercial slaughter plants are. I would challenge people to find unbiased information that confirms their suspicions. Google scholar is a good place to start that kind of research. Not all commercial slaughter facilities are top notch and conform to regulation, but not all of them are trash either. There are many policies and standards in place to protect people and the products. USDA has taken some big steps in the last decade to remedy a situation that was turning really sour. Long story short, cut the slaughter houses a little slack....they don't all suck.

Hmm... I will follow the path my brain follows in pictures.

From the Jungle to the Jungle Book, Bagiera to a real leopard.

From leopard to jaguar...

From jaguar to Puma

Puma, to Jaguarundi:

Ok I'll stop...
