bluey out of brumation, questions

Postby nat_the_brat » Fri Feb 15, 2008 2:42 pm

Hi Everyone
I have two blueys, both of which have been in brumation since sept. I brought them both out this week as it has been getting warmer and my husband noticed that they seemed to be getting very restless in their tubs (they were in tubs in my husband's den). Anyways, my female came out and has been active ever since... and has eatten a little to. My male came out an and seemed really alert the first day and has since started to decline in activity. He hasn't eatten nor does he seem anywhere near interested in food. He now seems fairly listless and I am wondering if this is cause to take him to the vet or if this may be normal coming out of brumation behaviour ? The room they are in now is fairly warm and they are on a light cycle with heat and uva/uvb.

He also light red coloration on his stomach. I think he always had this but I don't remeber it being as bright as it was before and I was wondering if this could be a sign of ill health or if I am just over worrying. I tried to take pictures but the camera just wouldn't pick it up very well at all. What should I do (or not do)? thanks

Hiya, has the one with the red tummy recently shed? Has he appeared to have lost significant wiehgt at all, and are his eyes and nose and mouth clear?
Mine has gone in and out of brumation all winter. He'll sleep for weeks, then be up for a few days, then sleep a few more days, etc. If you are concerned, maybe you can always just bring them in for a yearly check up in the springtime when he wakes up, that way you'll know all is well. . .

yes the eyes, nose are clear and he may have shed in the near past but it wasn't too recent either (perhaps a couple of weeks?). I have already made a vet appointment to give the once over since his listlessness is really really bothering me. Every time I checked on him during brumating he gave me a much more alert reaction than what he is doing now. Thanks for the input though, it makes me feel a little better!

Sounds like he might not be done sleeping yet. I wouldn't expect mine to really start to wake till sometime in March (if I am lucky). You are farther north so you could be on a later schedule. I think they all wake up differently. Maybe your female want's to get the house in order before the boys come to call?

Keep us posted. I will be interested to hear what the vet has to say.

thanks for the tips everyone, helps put my mind to reset. The vet agreed with me that he looks a little too red and to keep an eye on it, but that it wasn't showing signs of bacterial infection. We also weighed him (650 grams!) and the vet told me to bring him back in a week if he showed no signs of perking up. So that's the best answer I could hope for! I am still slightly concerned because he sits under his heat lamp and still shows no signs of waking up... if he was hanging out in the cooler end I wouldn't be so concerned. But for now I will play the sit and watch game!
