Bearded Dragons vs BTS

Postby cless986 » Mon Feb 18, 2008 10:06 pm

Not to offend anybody here, but I like BDragons a lot coz of their cool appareance (spikes and everything) never owned one and thinking to buy one but I have a BTS now and I really love it
But which is much cooler? what are the pros and cons between them?
I know that both of them have a flexible diet (compared to geckos that only eat bugs) and playful behaviours, but I want to know if a BD is worth it

well only you can make the choice. It's a personal taste thing that can't be answered by anyone else. Sure beardies look cool, and blueys are awesome but in the end its up to you.

This is a bluey forum (as you know) so maybe you'd be better off going to a beardie forum and asking them. I'm not being cruel or anything - but this isn't really about blueys, and if you've read the rules - this is kinda against them.

beardie are pretty cool. but they do need a bigger cage than a bluey it is usually reccomended that they have a minimun of twice the length from snout to tail ie a 2 foot beardy should have a four foot long cage. 3 times length is even better. beardies are also alot more inquisitive than a bluey. where a bluey is content to watch whats goin on and watch one thing at a time (mine seems to watch t.v.) with a mild interest and then chill out and take a nap. where as a beardy is also shifting it's attention handle about 20 or so beardies every weekend and they always are checking something new out. when i'm handling one with 3 or so other people, they always look from one person to the other back and forth they they stare at something on the floor then they look at someone walking by and so on. they're pretty cool. like a bluey they just turn into a big lap lizard when their older but they quite often just randomly get the urge to run. they are a bit higher maintenance expect to feed a small beardy in upwards or 30 crickets and worms per day along with salad. they need lots of food to accomodate thir fast growing bodies. also expect to spend 15 to 20 minutes a day cleaning their cage when they are full grown. all in all they are cool little guys. they make a good choice as a pet. they don't quite have the personality of a bluey but still neat. but i still think blueys rule over all.

and blotch is right this is a bluey forum.

Both are great personalities. I personally find that Blueys seem to be lower maintenance overall though. I get my roaches from a guy who has Beardies, and he started breeding the roaches because his Beardies ate so many crickets that it was getting too expensive for him. I don't know if Beardies can eat stuff like chicken and turkey burger and eggs, the way Blueys can.
Both are great lizards, I just find my sweet Bluey is a better fit for my crazy busy lifestyle.

I own both and they are both great in their own ways, I dont find Beardies any harder to care for than a BTS, she eats greens better than my BTS, is more active and is around all year round (as opposed to 3-4 months brumating BTS) you'll get a different interaction from a BTS as they seem to enjoy human contact more, the head bobbing and waving from my beardie still cracks me up, but then again so does the exicited/angry/grumpy scouring looks from my skink. Its your money and choice, get both if you can afford to keep them (seperately), you won't be dissapointed either way.

It all comes down to personal preference. I own both, and I love them both dearly. If I could only choose one lizard, I would choose bts. They are more fun to snuggle with. My beardie is very handleable, but she's a little more prickly. I found that both bts and bd are easy to care for. It is true that beardies eat like crazy when they are young. I recently started breeding roaches. It makes feeding the dragon less of a chore. I don't need to run to the pet store for crickets any more!

My decided factor between say a bluey or bearded or uro was the skin.. I saw myself cuddling a lot more with something smoothe as opposed to something with rough skin. Dunno if anyone else considered that. The rest of it as far as diet and matenence didnt really matter much, I was ready to take it on..Then we got baby Chomper in..and I took him before anyoen else had a chance to think about it.

hey, just asking for a comparison xD
Are BD and BTS the only reptiles that likes humans? I mean, being easy to care and great to have as an pet. There are others too?

I would say that there are plenty other reptiles out there that would make good pets...Blue Tongues seem to be the best in my experience, for me...but some people prefer snakes, there are monitors as well...I have had a great (short term) experience with Acantharus (Ackie) monitors, they are very curious and interesting to watch while being a manageable size and pretty handleable.

The choice is definitely up to you...I think I speak for most, if not all, people on this Blue Tongue Forum that Blueys are the best, though! :D

BDs are much faster than BTs, but their both great in comparison, and easy to tame, BTs get a little more pricey, but its all worth it

When I first came to this forum, I asked the same exact question. In fact you can search for the thread if you like, you will find good answers.

What it came down to for me was the feeding. I liked the thought of a little "garbage disposal" which turned out to be the BTS. They can eat a lot of different things. Also, Beardies, to my knowledge, are supposed to be fed crickets daily. I didn't want to deal with crickets - OR feeding daily. I don't own one, but I find Blueys to be more convenient.

Although sometimes I wish Bella was a little more active.. that's the only draw I have to Beardies.

Man, these critters have blue tongues. How cool is that? I've had friends that have had beardies, not nearly as fun. Kind of stand-off-ish. BTS hands down.

carnivore, and somewhat dangerous, awesome!
Where i can find more about them? and places to buy them?

I used to keep bearded dragons and enjoyed doing so. The biggest annoyance is that many bearded dragons require regular soakings (every other day) to prevent dehydration; some can be taught to drink from a dish, though.

While bearded dragons are omnivorous, they are still slightly harder to feed than a bts. BTS will accept cooked meat and cat food, but a bearded dragon demands live prey for the meat portion of its diet.

I think Beardies are beautiful but my Bluey wins for the sheer affection she gives when I hold her. Like someone said, it's nicer to cuddle a soft animal than a spikey one! :)

I have both, as well... I also have a Uromastyx geyri.. and all are great pets. As far as feeding goes, the BTS and the Uro are the easiest and most low maintenance. My Beardie requires bugs and more bugs and is pretty particular about which greens he will eat and how they should be chopped or torn or sliced....... he's a finicky guy (very similar to a cat!), I guess.

As you are probably aware, they need just as much, if not more, space as a Bluey ..and their UV and heat requirements are similar.

For me, it's a matter of whether you like smooth or spiked... or both! LOL It's why I have all three, I suppose.

They all will hang out with me while doing homework or watching a dvd or whatever. They all have tagged my fingers by mistake, when going after food. They all have poo'd on me, too.

I think it's like some have mentioned... it's whatever YOUR preference is. And as a side note, there are some geckos that can thrive off a prepared diet, ie., Cresteds.

Good luck with whatever your choice is! :D
