Sick Skink

Postby soccerskink » Wed Feb 20, 2008 11:14 am

I am new to this forum. My daughter has a about 1 year old male BTS names Popeye (yes after the cartoon due to his blue/black eye shadow). He is great!. I recently took him to the vet (Thanks Mom) and he has mouth rot. Not bad, but he is on medicine. We also changed his feeding schedule and he is now on a better diet thanks to the caresheet on this forum. We also sheck his tank and the temperature appear correct, maybe a little cool on the warm side (95). He is getting a little pudgy and has not "pooped" in a few days. He is also going to shed. My daughter (and I) am a little concerned that he has not left us a little present to clean up. Correction, a big present as he has left very small white presents and has been "farting:, especially when he is taken out to wander around the room and terrorize the cat. Help.

Welcome to the forum! I came to this forum when my skink was sick too. Can you tell us exactly what you are feeding him now? How long has he been on the new diet? Make sure he has enough calcium. Sometimes it also helps to soak the skink in warm water and massage the belly.

What she said.....The warm water soak should help a lot. put some water in your bath tub so that its about an inch deep and let him soak for about 20 minutes. Just be careful that the water doesn't get cold....

He has been on his new diet for about 10 days. He has been on his antibiotic for about the same amount of time. He is getting kale, escarole, papaya mixed with a little cat food. I dddo have a calcium supplement I can mix in but haveee not done so to this point.

Funny about t he bath.....I just had him in the water for about 5 minutes to help get his scales off. I can put him back in later (He is busy watching me type and having a stare contest with the cat.

I would not be concerned about three days without a poop. The antibiotics combined with a new diet may have put a bump in his road. If he has fruit, veg and plenty of water you should see something soon. And like the other good advice ... a warm soak will usually stimulate the old poop machine! Good luck and keep us posted. A picture of your little buddy would be nice too.

P.S. If he has mouth rot try to keep the water level well below the mouth and make sure his mug is dry after his bath.

Thanks for the advice. No results yet. Gave him some of his favorite food this morning, peas. I know they aren't that great for him but he usually has results from them.

Took some more pictures of him last night, with his "pet" cat, Muffin. Haven't figured out, having trouble loading them.

I don't know what everyone else thinks about it but I work at petsmart and while talking to someone from another petsmart about my bts because he had the beginnings of a resp infect(took to vet got meds) She said to give him Benebac after the meds each day.(She's had nothing but good results with all kinds of reptiles using that method.) That the antibiotics can harm as well as help his system. This made sence because when my horse was on antibiotics I gave her probios. and the change was amazing.
I was too late to give it to him, couldnt find anyone who caried it so I odered it online.
Also asked the vet about it and he said that would be fine. Ask your vet but next tiem Chomper needs meds I'm gonna give it a go.

This is a really good point. Antibiotics messed up my skink's poo big time. I could never find the avian/reptile Bene-bac at any PetSmarts or PetCos, but I did find it at a local bird specialty store. I also used Acidophiliz+, and my skink seemed to really like the taste: http://www.reptilesupply.com/product.ph ... cts_id=227

antibiotics cause constipation in humans too.

would big amounts of fibre help?

Pooping, or lack thereof

Postby Armand's Mom » Sat Feb 23, 2008 12:54 pm

I definitely wouldn't worry about pooping. Ours has only done so several times since we've had him. He's fat and pretty happy and sleepy.
