i think the problems occur when there is ink or dye on the paper and also how big the bits are, as the smaller they are the more likly it is that they can accendtly eat it.
I think cutting paper (unles you have a shredder) would be very time consuming and you would have to cut an awful lot of paper to creat enough, and could be costly in time and money

the bedding i buy for cricket is recycled paper shreds. its called eco bedding. its great because it fluffs up and he can burrow in it nicely. i get it from petco, its like $8.00 and a bag seems like it will last for a while.

I used shredded paper for about a week. Sure they loved moving around in it - but it was noisey, and didn't do anything i wanted it to.
When they peed - it stuck to the walls and floor.
When they pooed it stunk and also stuck to everything.
It was a pain to clean.

I used shredded paper from my paper shredder once when I was out of aspen. It kept getting in the water bowl everytime Bubba moved.

shredded paper
We used shredded paper, as the previous owner did, and it worked great. In fact, the previous owners used to spray water on it as a way to get some humidity in the tank. And, since it's under the heat lamp, it dried out relatively quickly.
Someone I know, who owns more than 100 animals (on 6 acres) uses paper at the bottom of his BTS and loves it. The skink seemed very happy and very mellow.
