As someone who works at an animal shelter, I find it very sad that people use hitting to "teach" their dogs and cats. Very sad.
That said, I agree with never totally trusting a dog or cat around a lizard. Like someone else said, instincts can and do kick in.

I also work at an animal shelter. And if you put 2 dogs together and one screws up, the other bites it. It's how they learn naturally, they get punishments for screwing up.
For example, last week we were socializing puppies with each other (playtime) and one didn't know how to play nicely. It would attack the little puppies. It was taken out and later put with some bigger puppies. When it tried to attack, it got pinned and snapped at/bitten. It stopped attacking. Then when it was barking and playing rough, it got ignored. It quieted down, watched the other puppies, and after 2 sessions it was actually playing like a puppy should. It learned the dog way.
IMO there is nothing wrong with punishment with a smack on the nose or rump. That's a big difference from beating your animal. And face it, you can scream at your dog till your lungs give out and if there's nothing negative to associate that with, he's not really going to care. Dogs use physical ways to 'teach' each other, why is it so bad if a human uses it?

Because we are not dogs. And I don't think we should scream at our dogs, either. A dog would never respect a "screaming person". That would just be confusing to the dog. Humane training, and NILF will usually teach most dogs what they need to know.
Using the logic of "acting as dogs do" is where people have gotten the mistaken idea that "pinning" a dog is a good idea also. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

Wanna explain to me where knocking a dogs feet out from under him isn't a good idea? I do that to Snoopy all the time :snicker: She falls, looks up me, then puts her head back down to sleep. Stupid dog ^.^
And what is NILF? I guarantee I've never used any on my dog...

NILF. Nothing in Life is Free. The dog has to "work" for everything. Food, attention, treats, playtime. By work I mean commands. Sit, stay, down, etc.

I'm surprised you've never heard of this, working at a shelter.

Oh, we use that, all our dogs have to sit (or other commands if we have time to teach them) for almost everything. We just don't use acronyms. It's nice talking (or arguing) about shelter care, so I'll send you a PM and let someone get this topic back on track.
I meant to ask before, but does someone have an ID opinion on Popeye?

hitting dogs is the best way of training them. It's also the best way of training kids.
I was smacked when i did something wrong and i grew up not wantingto be smacked - so i rarely did anything worth a smack. Dogs are the same - they don't want to be hit - that's why they cower. They know they've done something wrong and they will be punished. A smack on the nose or the butt along with some ignoring goes a long long way. They soon learn.
Also - why is it ok to give a treat to a dog for doing something good yet punishment is not ok? Double standards. Even that british chick that is on the show "it's me or the Dog" uses physical punishments. Choke chains are apparently a no no - yet she uses them, she has other methods too - but physical punishment is also used.
In regards to Blueys - well they are way too small to be hit by a human - however when in groups, blueys have a pecking order. Trust me on that one - I see it all the time.

I find BTS are just too lazy to misbehave without just cause. Don't give them a reason to, they wont try anything stupid (biting), and you don't need to smack them. A dog or cat however is always willing to push it's boundaries and try to one-up you, requiring correction.

The best way? I don't think so...
I guess we will just have to agree to disagree. In 39 years of living with animals I have never laid a hand on one.

Great pics, and I'm glad you are sensible enough to know your animals and supervise them properly! That is a gorgeous cream-coloured cat by the way!
And Cute Skinker too!
(for the record, Cesar Millan doesn't ever "hit" the dogs he works with, and he does very well!)
