Snail Question

Postby soccerskink » Wed Feb 27, 2008 8:27 am

I have seen several times that snails are good for BTS, however, everything I have read mentions "garden snails." I have several fish tanks and there are quite a few snails in them. Does anyone know if it would be safe to feeds these to my BTS?

And an aditional question, since there is this nice snail thread already here!

I understand that BT's like snails. But, with or without shell? Wouldn't the shell be kind of hard for then to chew? Wouldn't you worry about impaction?

In the wild they eat snails a lot, i believe.. and those obviously come with the shell on.
When i gave mine snails he crunched up the shell quite easily and really seemed to enjoy it, and the shells are suposed to be good for calcium.
The shells are thin and digestable.. so i don't think impaction would be an issue.

More often than not the shells are left behind.

I was also wondering where to get these snails...The ones in a fishtank that come from plants and such..I dont know if I would feed those simply because those are a parasite to tanks and I would be afraid of what might be on them

take a look in your garden.

Hold on to them for a week or so - if they don't die - they're fine to feed!

I have a tank of 180 ramshorn (small aquatic) snails. They should breed to make lots of babies. Snails are only pets in tanks because they breed so fast, which we happen to like. If you know anyone who has a snail problem in their tank, offer to take the snails for free and give em to your BTS.

BTS love snails. No need to remove the shell or crush it up, BTS are made to do that. Just hand it over and keep your fingers out of the way.

Ralphie hates eating snails. You can tell by the look on his face how much he hates eating them.

As Luke says they generally crack the shell open, discard most of it and just eat the snail inside. To help them crack them open they sometimes like to bash them against something so I always feed mine close to a rock or glass or a cupboard so they can give it a good whack.

Jubby's a master snail eater, gone in 10 seconds. Ralphie's pretty good but has a tendency to swallow them whole if they're little, and Santos is a sadistic little snot and likes to play with his for ages.

Lisa - Nice Av of Jub jub! I thought it was a centralian at first but then realised who it was.

They are great pics of Ralphie mungin' on a snail. I think it may be a blotchie thing to just swallow them whole - my guys do it too - however my easterns like to chew them more.

I reckon Chopper is half lowland half alpine. He has the same head as Ralphie just with different colouring.

Pryce will crunch little ones then swallow the whole thing, but will discard most of the shell of the bigger snails.

Speaking of, have you seen the commercial for mortein with the bluetongue in it? It's blink and you miss it right at the beginning of the ad. I can't figure out if it's a beat up old eastern or possibly a centralian. And I need to know!

can't say i have seen it, but i'll keep an eye out.

Which reminds me, The film clip of 'Weak and Powerless" by A Perfect Circle has a nice northern in it. The chick holds it all wrong and it's flapping about like a fool, but never the less - it's a nice Northern.

I'm not sure if this has been spoken about before - but I've been meaning to bring it up for like over a year now.

Eastern. There are similar ones in Bendigo, about the North Western extreme of their range in Vic. They are thick on the ground around the mine workings ie. Eaglehawk and along the Bendigo creek, ie. Golden Square, Kangaroo Flat. I've not seen them North of Bendigo though, only Stumpies which are also still common in the area.
