New BTS owner!

Postby leni1 » Thu Mar 06, 2008 2:19 am

Hi!
Iv'e just bought my first BTS. The pet shop owner wasn't very helpfull in giving me advise on how to care for my new pet. Iv'e looked at all the BTS sites and care sheets I can find but would like some additional information from experienced owners!
I want to make sure that my new friend is happy and contented while in my care!

:btsnet2: youve come to the right place for advise, but i think your gonna have to give us some info or question before you can get answers..

The care sheet on here is amazing, with a very detaild guide to houseing, husbandry, feeding and Key things to look out of in regards to you lil friends health!

the advice you get will wholey depend on what bts you have, how old s/he is, the size of you tank/cage, what heating/lighting equipment.. etc.

But im sure you will get all the infomation you need right here!!!

Welcome!
If you've read the caresheet here then you'll probably already have more than enough info to care your for BTS perfectly, and if you have any specific questions on top of that the people here are very knowledgable and helpful

Please post some pictures of your bluey when you can!

Thank You!

Thank you to those who replied to my post!
Like I said the shop owner was rather useless when it came to giving me information. She wasnt sure what BTS she was selling and their age. I'm still waiting for her to get back to me with this information! The tank she sold me is just under 3 feet long so not very large but I'm in the prosses of drawing up plans to build a bigger enclosure. Ive got a 100 watt ceramic heat emiter and a uvb light at the moment which seem to be working well!
I do have a few questions:- How long does shedding usually last?
How can I help to make him/her comfortable during this time?
Is appetite loss normal during this period?
Iv'e posted a couple of pics of my new baby so if you can tell me from those what kind he/she is then that would be great!
Thank you again :)

I would say, it looks like your a proud owner of a possible mixed Blotched (other member will say for sure).

Your tank, so far sound adequate. but bigger is always better (with appropriate heat and light).

Shedding, for me, can last about 4 - 5 days, but it can change for each skink.

Lynyrd normally stops eating a few days before the shed but then regains normal appetite onec finished (quite normal).

I useual a give lynyrd a shallow pyrex dish with water to bath in and plenty of rocks to rub against.

But s/he looks like a great addition to your family!!!!!
try and get some :ryo: for us all to see!!!!!!

It is a T. gigas sp. Hard to tell whether it is a T. gigas evanescens (Merauke) or a T. gigas gigas (Indonesian). I am leaning towards Merauke, but im not 100%. I dont see any Blotch in it though.

I was leaning towards it being and indonesian myself but not sure!
Ill post some more pics later today or tommorrow!
I,ve put a shallow dish there for bathing and am changing the water frequently throughout the day to keep it fresh! I have noticed that he/she has been rubbing his/her head against the side of the hide but it's rather smooth, so what kind or rocks would be best for me to put in?
I'm stuck on what to name my new family member, really need to think about giving him/her one so I dont have to keep refering to him/her as he/she him/her etc! lol Suggestions welcome!! :)

Welcome to the forum. :welcome: From what I can see in the pictures my first guess would be Merauke. For shedding purposed my boy loves those hollowed out log hides and also fake plants. Loss of interest in food is quite normal ... sounds like you are doing a fine job. :D Don't forget :ryo:

Looks Merauke to me, the messy pattern on the tail, the smoother banding on the back, the speckled legs, and the colouring are all reminiscent of my own Chuffalumps! :D

Hello, yes ,just looked and think positive Merauke, add your pics with your posts via the post reply and up load picture box, the tank sounds big enough for now (look in the enclosure section to blag ideas for yours) I reckon he's one to two years old, so they shed at between four to six week intervals and the gap between sheds get larger with age(could help guess the age)they tend to leave off the food before and go for it again after. If its got a fiery temperament it maybe wild caught or not often handled, check out the care sheet a few times ,its a good long (but worth it) read.get through as many posts as you can stomach as there been a million questions asked and answered here in the 200 previous pages.\enjoy your stay and have a laugh with us....

Your bts looks like my Ocho and he is a Merauke you will soon find out that they have such a great way about them they are such fun keep an eye out when he's shedding that bits don't get stuck on if they do put him in warm water up to about his shoulders it helps good luck with your new skink. Sue
