Belly Heat?

Postby Bird_Brain » Sat Mar 08, 2008 5:24 pm

Ok, so on my local craigslist, someone is selling 5 48"x24" plastic reptile cages for $400obo. I am really thinking about getting them. The only problem is they are all about 12" tall so I can not put a basking light in there safely. They currently have belly heat (flexwatt) on the bottom as the heat source, so I am guessing that the person used these for snakes.

So, has anyone successfully kept BTS with flexwatt as a heat source? Even for that cheap, I may still get them for when I get back into snakes.

Thanks
Brad

I'd get them! That's a great deal for 5 big tanks. I wonder if there is a way to rig up some type of light. The flexwatt would give you a hot and cool side, but it wouldn't do anything for a basking area really.

Hmm i dont think undertank heating as the only source would be safe for a bluey. They sense heat only from above and they could easily just sit on a too hot spot for far too long and burn themselves. A simple solution would be to somehow rig the lamp to be a bit above the cage if your worried about 12 inches being to close.
My BTS can read. (I think)

Do you have any pictures of the cages that we might be able to see? Maybe we can think of another way...? :) I think that you should be able to figure out a way to set up some lamps....but, would have to see the cages to know...maybe they are a brand that we can look up online?

Nothing wrong with a regulated heat pad.

"Belly heat" is a myth imo.

Also, why couldn't you use a light on a 12" tank?

Just use a lower wattage.

Here is the ad. There are 3 different brands of cages. 2 of them are Boaphile, 2 are Moonstruck (never heard of them), and 1 is an Animal Plastics.
http://fortwayne.craigslist.org/for/597226545.html

When I said that I couldnt use a light fixture in a 12" tall cage, I was talking about mounting them inside, so I can still stack them. After I mount the ceramic/plastic fixture and put the bulb in, it will be sticking down like 6", then put a cage around the bulb to protect it and it will just be in the way. The other thing I was thinking about doing would be to cut out a part on the top and attach some hardware cloth to it. Then just place the lamps on top and make some sort of spacer between the cages.

I have gave them an offer, but havent heard back yet. They are around where my parents live and I am going back this weekend, so I have to see if the people would be willing to hold them for me or I am willing to paypal them a deposit. We will see.

I currently am using 12" tall cages for the majority of my blueys right now. But I wanted to stack these cages on top of each other.

 Leigh dear ... have a pint and relax.

Brad ... I think I get why you are concerned. Because the cages are plastic right? Low wattage won't cut it if you can't get the temps up high enough.

You already built a beautiful stand for the 2 tanks, do the same for these. Then you'll have a matching set ^.^
