Bluey won't defecate

Postby Rex'sMomma » Sun Apr 13, 2008 9:02 am

I've had my blue tongue for about a year now, I got him as a baby and he's the first one I've ever had. Recently though he hasn't been defecating. I do find urate in the cage from time to time but he only defecates around once a month. I did take him to a local exotics vet that i trust and she said that his abdomen felt fine and he didn't have an impaction, and I know he get's a good diet, so I just can't figure out what's wrong
Help please!

have you cleaned out the entire cage? some blueys hide it ^_^

Also, how much do you feed him and how often?

What are you feeding him?

The fact that he still leaves urates is good, as is the vet's prognosis. I'd say his body is probably using most of the nutrients from his food, leaving almost nothing left to become poo.

As Raven said, what are you feeding and how much?

I feed him every other day a mix of veggies, collard greens, kale, yellow squash, blueberries, the occasional banana and then i add in some crushed up land tortoise food, ( i couldnt find anything specifically for blue tongues and my vet said that was probly the closest out of all of my options) and sometimes i'll occasionally throw in some boiled chicken. Also every now and then I'll give him some super worms or crickets just because he loves to chase them. I had thought for awhile that maybe he just wasnt eating enough, but when i feed him every other day i let him eat all he wants...

Try feeding more meats for a while and see if that helps? You seem to be feeding a huge amount of veggies, which is pretty much water and nutrients. While good, that means there wouldn't be anything left for the BTS to pass except water and urates.

It shouldn't be a problem, because he's leaving urates and the vets prognosis seems right. I wouldn't worry to much, however if its poo you want.. try feeding more meat, you've got a lot of veggies in his diet (not that that's a bad thing, as Fatal explained) , you could also try feeding him some egg- guaranteed poo-nami!

lol if she wants the thing to poop the vegies are the way to go, they arnt just water and nutrients they have a tonne of indigestible cellulose. hence why if you just ate cabbage you'd poop like twice a day. :P

At least if you feed meat and egg you'de be able to smell it to find it. :-)

Try a mix of scrambled egg and grated carrot. This seems to get things moving.

You will not miss it if you feed him turkey burger! Talk about poo-nami. . :hurl:

You can also try a warm bath if you are ever worried about the impaction thing, (not that that sounds like your skinker's issue)

Egg is a good one too.
I'm sure he'll be fine.
