Exactly. Yep, it's VERY young, but that's just how it is. If you don't let them attend, ALL their friends know and talk about it and the poor kid is left in the dark because their parents were worried or were feeling sensitive. It's not a good feeling and the child is left with lots of questions while everyone around them grows up. It's not like they just show them porn videos either -- it's described and taught in a tasteful manner with fuzzy bunny books for goodness sake.

I know exactly where you're coming from though but kids hit middle school and start with the dirty jokes before we know it....I went to a friggin stricter than heck christian school, and even WE started sex-ed in the 5th grade...

Drew, How old is Boris? My Charlotte 07 has had two episodes of small quantities of mucoid matter (colored but not shaped like classic sperm plugs) and I'm wondering if I should get excited. One was on my shirt (not so exciting) and the other was hanging from a BM. Did you see anything prior to that plug?
Also, my 4th grade son doesn't want me to explain anything sexual to him. He is embarassed and grossed out by the whole concept. He is a little immature but I don't want him to learn from his peers. Suggestions?
(Never thought I'd ask for parenting advice re: sex ed on a skink forum! )

Aggiegirl I too saw a few rounds of what you discribed as mucoid matter before Tattoo showed me his maleness during a poo session. Tattoo is just over 5 months old so at the time I wrote the stuff off as unknown. I'd have to say now I think it was "boy" stuff.

Aggiegirl, there are good childrens' books you can check out at the library for him. Don't go with him to pick 'em out, (mortifying for a 4th grader) just ask the librarian, pick and choose ones you feel are appropriate yet scientific and factual. Put them in his room so he can learn from them
(but not in an embarrassing place where his buddies will see it.). He may act all grossed out by it in your presence, but he'll very likely let his curiosity over-ride, (because he probably has friends wose parents won't let them know about it) and he'll look and learn. You can explain to him that he'll get to be the smart kid in knowing what really happens, and that its totally OK to be grossed out by it at his age, but that you felt that he was certainly smart/intelligent enough to learn about it now, even though its for "older" people. Tell him that yeah, its embarrassing for a lot of people, but he can always come to you with any questions he might have.
(That's what I would do, anyway, in your situation. This is only my opinion, mind! I'm going only based on what I know of you via this forum! I know you will find a way perfect and appropriate for you and your kids. ) Good luck!

I would let it play out! If he doesn't want anything exlained to him, I would just let him know that the lines of communication are always open if he changes his mind; because the kids will start talking and he'll more than likely feel dumb asking THEM what they mean. That's my thinking anyway! I think 4th grade is still normal too for the whole sex is "icky" thing....so I'll bet he'll change his mind in a year or so. My old man took me for a "long drive" and just laid the whole thing out and that was that.

My whole thing with sexual matters and my kids is open communication -- that's what I was taught -- me and some buddies in like 6th grade found a bunch of dirty mags in the SCHOOL recycle box! We brought them home, and I ended up showing my folks. My friends thought I was crazy and insisted I would be dead meat, but my rents applauded my honesty. Had I thought for a second I would be in trouble or felt uncomfortable, I know I wouldn't have told them about it. Then, my parents let me keep the mags. LOL! JUST KIDDING! But no, they always stressed no closed doors, no secrets, no guilt. Always come out with the truth because it's better in the long run, and in saying that, they always promised to be fair. I always remembered that, and it worked pretty well growing up.

My family is messed up. I've been making naughty jokes with my mom and older sister since I was very young. There's be times mom would say something to Chrissy, I'd question what it was, and she'd just out and out tell me. I think she just enjoyed my ewwws. But we've always been open, and I definately recommend it. Worked wonders for me.

Over here the tv bangs on all the time in adverts for safe sex, stressing about clyamidia and ghonerea(never had it ,cant spell it)so they must be on the rise,it was all about aids when I was a teenager.My daughters 14 and still prefers cartoons to boys I hope this lasts forever,we are open and honest to any questions on any subject, she knows the score but is grossed out by the thought, one of her mates is the local bike, so we curbed that friendship.

Oh heck ya the truth is the best way. I never really beleved what they told us in school when i was yonger. i could not beleve that they a let a stork has a baby in it mouth. lol
