Cooper
So you did it! Sorry to hear he arrived in less than stellar shape. Feed and hydrate him well before you think about deworming him---but I do agree that a fecal is in order. His colors are nice. Love that yellow! Can't wait to see the new and improved version. He is going to be gorgeous! Hope his personality stays chill even when his condition improves! Glad he is in better hands now! Keep updating us with pictures so we can experience your Kei vicariously!

I did contact the previous owner regarding the mites and they apologized and are sending me some Provent-a-mite. So they are trying to make it right, which does show a lot about their character.
The only thing I dont understand is I noticed it with in hours of having him and they have had him for a year or so and they didnt? Or if they did, they never said anything to me about it.

I wonder if its because the previous owner had a bunch of snakes/pythons, and they worked more with those than the Kei? Aren't the mites usually the kind that infest boas/pythons?

mites
I just got a Giant millipede for my daughter for Christmas and he has mites. With millis these (the brown mites) have a symbiotic relationship. I've been told that these are innoculous to other animals and people. Anyone want to echo these sentiments? Sounds like you've had a chore getting rid of the snake mites and I can't say I envy that battle---even though I really envy you for having the Kei!

my milli also has these mites and has been living with my male for months now and I have never seen these mites on him. I was VERY worried about putting the milli in with my male when I first noticed mites, but every source I have read said that they are not a parasitic type of mites and will not harm other animals. So far it has proven to be true.

Your male what?
And definitely, glad they are trying to make it right. Same thing happened with my Sunny, I spotted the mites the day I got him, and they the seller argued that his animals didn't have them. That's why we have on the caresheet (questions to ask before buying) to have sellers check VERY VERY carefully even using a magnifying glass if they have to. Eventually I got a call stating he had found them and that they were "very, very small, but were indeed there".
Good job!

Absolutely! I've had two giant millipedes over the years, and I love em -- the mites are indeed symbiotic and normal, and will not transfer. Well, sometimes a mite or two does fall off perhaps onto your hand, but it won't invade your body or anything like that.

I had a horrible problem even getting the guy i purchased my woma python from to even apologize that he sent me a snake with mites. He too denied it and tried to turn it around on me (even though I had the snake at my place for maybe 2 hours before i noticed the mites).
But what really upsets me is when people say that mites come with the territory. Like you should just expect all reptiles to have them. Thats like saying all dogs do and should have fleas.

I got Kei Kei from the same person. Fortunately she didn't have mites. I was under the impression that he kept his skinks in naturalistic kind of set-ups...meaning that he brings things in from outside and puts them in the tanks. Between that and his snakes, I would assume that mites would be easy to come by. I also agree with the above statement that he may have been paying more attention to his snakes and didn't notice them on the skink. Who knows. The guy wasn't above and beyond fantastic when I dealt with him, but he was reasonable and I don't really have any complaints. Hopefully Cooper gets over his mites soon and you can cuddle him even more.
