As far as I know, that's been recanted! In the Bible, it says that "Irian Jaya" (they don't refer to them as IN in the Bible) and Merauke will both be known as evanescens. BUT, I've learned that Shea has since changed his views on that. It was never official anyway.

I'm still on the fence. I'm thinking it could be a merauke, Indo, or IJ, or a cross of some kind.
This is one of those tough ones.
Those narrow, tight stripes, stripes on the back of the head, long tail...
Can you get a clear shot of the side of the head, kaiju?
Looks like a really great animal and friend, nonetheless.

Goodbye, BTS.net -- We've had to good times. I do hope someone else will come along and make it the lovely community it once was.

I say it's 100% IJ.
The BROWN stripes over a tan back are good hints. Most Indos have black stripes instead of an actual colored stripe. That's not always the case though as many of the gray Merauke's have brown-ish stripes. Plus the foggy forelegs I've seen on IJ quite a bit. Indo's have black legs, Merauke have pretty dark speckled legs.
Plus, the tail isn't really longer than a typical BTS tail -- Merauke tails are VERY long and thin.

Main difference in the majority of cases is that Easterns have clean forelegs, IJs have patterned ones. Since it's not 100% reliable (some Easterns can have patterns, some IJs clean forelegs), you go to other characteristics. Andrew has an excellent page about Eastern identification!
The skink in the pictures doesn't have a lot of patterning (some IJs have more black than white), but does still have some, as you can see in this one:
