well blueys pee is made up of water and urate which is the white stuff. So forget about pee as a problem. In regards to the poop, use recycled paper kitty litter (I think it's the same as carefresh). That stuff is great, binds to the poop and helps dry it out quickly for easy removal!

im plannig to line up the cage floor with linoleum to keep it protected too
the substrate youre saying is not available here in the Philippines
so might use just newspaper

hi guys. What do you think of a all wooden cage? screen top, screen door but swing out?
im having second thoughts about the sliding door, the security and all plus if i use the swing out it would give me more space to reach in
i am just worried about cleaning, wont the urine and poop stain the wood to much? thanks!!!!

You can give it a few coats of varnish or exterior wood stain to seal it, the sliding doors are lift and remove so the access is the whole size of the opening and you can buy cabinet locks specifically for sliding glass doors{go to a jewellers, have a look}

since this thread is entitles which one.. id post it here anyway.. hehe
these are the choices i have with my BTS, all are a few months old andi m getting them from a reputable breeder.
the first pic i guess is an IJ, this fellow is cool and mellow down, im just worried bec the skin looks a little dry and there a little "scar" in its tail

the second pic i believe i an eastern <? might be wrong guys..> love the colors on this guy, but he is missing a few toes and has a lump on its neck...

the third pic i guess is an IJ too but this guy has attitude which i love. the only concern i have is to settle him down.. but this guy is almost perfect great looking skin, clear eyes etc etc
it wont try to bit but would huff and puff and display its tonue

so what do you think guys??

I would deffinately go with the third. He looks like an Indonesian to me, not IJ. Scars and missing digits are nothing to worry about as long as they are healed, but you might as well save yourself the trouble of possible shedding problems. And a lump might be early signs of metabolic bone disease. After he gets used to you, the display will stop or decrease.

And in case your still wondering, a decent size for an adult enclosure is 4' by 2'. Hight isn't too important as long as it won't climb out.

Look for the best skink possible; you'll know which one is the right one. It's hard for us to see just through pictures without inspecting the animal. Go with your instincts.

As far as cage height, make sure it's high enough to prevent most attempts at escape, but it also must be low enough if you decide to put the heat lamp and UV lamp on a screen top pointed down. Otherwise, the effects fo the UV lamp and heat lamp will be compromised.

A 12" high vivarium would be fine if there were zero possibility for escape. That might take some genius engineering. Also be careful the heat lamp bulb isn't too powerful in wattage if you go with a cage that low. It's usually best to get the cage first and get the bluey second, so all tests and temperatures can be verified before the animal goes in.

id say really go for the third one, love the dark color but i love the brown colorations too. oh well.
the cage i am having built is 3' x 20", i guess its ok for now. id make a new one whe nhe is big, im lacking space righ now..

the screen top would be fixed so he can lift it, the swing out door at the front would be fitted with locks too.

Yes, you still need a heatlamp. Temperature is only part of the setup: Skinks like to bask, and just ambient heat doesn't cut it. Your basking area should be on one end of the tank or the other, and should consist of an overhead lamp of some kind, flood or specific reptile reflector lamp, shining onto a rock. That rock, not the ambient temperature, should be about 100'F. With the measurements you're giving of your cage, it should be a great setup.

finally chose one of the three, i chose the first guy, the second was sold and the third cant seem to setle down, trying to lounge at my fingers everytime, i am thinking that i wil definitely have a gard time to let him settle down.
the skink that i chose seems a little "dry" im thinking definetely a rescued skink. you think guys he will be ok? im quite worried this is my first skink.....

about screen top security:
I jam airline tubing between the tank and the lip of the screen top for my snakes. I also use clips on some tanks, but I find the tubing fixes the lid on pretty well
if you're building your own tank and screen top, you can put on whatever kind of latches you like
