They won't heat the terrarium, but they do retain heat. Mine stay above 80 for hours after the light goes off.

The bluey bible mentions some species will sit on the pavement as the sun goes down, presumably absorbing the residual heat.

In my experience (I'll admit, limited), they tend to be diurnal/crepuscular.

Oops, I meant basking rock, not terrarium. Do you use a large rock? Real rocks that are thick would retain heat, but the standard flat rocks or tiles a lot of us use turn cold quick.

And I've noticed the same thing! Once I dim, they often become very active. Good observation.

I do, I use a big rock coupled with a large piece of shale, allowing for areas between 100 and 115, so he can bask at any temperature, with a cool side in the low-mid 70's.

I'm using an elevated flat piece of slate, and I really like the results - it lets Stripe pick from a variety of basking temperaturesl, by being on top of the slate under the heat lamp, under the slate, or on another part of the tank. I'm actually using multiple levels, sort of like a Retes Stack but not quite as extreme, since skinks don't climb as much as monitors do. It provides options for more and less heat, and sometimes Stripe will have half her body at one level and half at another. I wasn't sure if she would use the whole thing, but she does. Having the slate off the tank floor also makes for more surface area in the enclosure. You do have to make sure it is securely supported though!
