Hi Andrew,

Have you seen any of your other skinks i.e. different species / subspecies display this protective behaviour ?

YES!!! We'd love to bring the van up. I DID NOT expect all these mothers to have successful births. I'm pretty sure Sassy is gravid now too. :tired:

Good question...

Andrew, do you think they're actually being protective mothers, or do you think it's just an instinct for something else.....I'm just surprised I've never heard ANYTHING about BTS mothers being protective of their young.

Hi Zach!

Thanks for the PM on this thread. Sheesh I tell you I miss everything and it's hard to even find the ones I responded to.

If I ever seem to ignore anyone it's because I totally missed the thread or lost it. Just PM me if you'd like me to respond but I would normally if I saw it.

Anyways,

For all the years I've bred these guys I've seen it many times. It's good to know because the majority of my skinks are all tame - really calm adults but when they are just about to give birth some of them get really aggressive and attack me the moment I try to enter their area. Once the babies are born - sheesh it's pretty wild then too.

This is my little secret of what I do to stop the behavior - i remove the babies and wash the enclosure with new bedding. A day or two later if not a few hours they are tame as pie - back to their normal selves.

Do all the females do this? Nah - I don't even get a twitch from the orange mothers - they are so sweet.

However male breeders can become aggressive during the breeding season also so I'm careful.

I hope this helps,

Andrew

Zach, how are all the bebbies doing? Too busy to post pictures eh? What with preparing all those bottles, all the diaper changes, nightly feedings and all

What do you plan on doing with them all? You could go the Apu route and have them perform for TV

Andrew, so no difference among species?

Lisa, I hope to find them homes...man, Ray isn't kidding when he says he's mad for having so many babies -- I didn't expect them ALL to give birth! I keep saying that, but sheesh, they're coming all at once.

Hey, you should have had a little talk with Pearl. I considered a baby if I saw speckling, but she um, well, held out on me it seems.

Well derr!! I didn't think you were going to eat them or make shoes and handbags out of them! I meant, for the ones you don't find homes for on here, what other methods will you use to find homes for them?

Please don't say petshops or I'll stop coming on here.

(Sorry to any petshop workers out there. I don't hate petshops or their workers, I just don't agree with any type of animal being sold in them is all)

:hehe:

None of the babies have their regular or adult colors yet; I'm excited to see if they do develop specking (pearl babies) the Peach babies are starting to develop the colors right now...

Lisa, I would never sell to a pet store; we'll hang on to all of them until they're sold I suppose; or you never know, we may end up keeping some but I can't imagine that! 10 is the max we can successfully take care of and feel good about it.
