Tank addition question.

I am adding a little ledge in my tank for my skink to go on so that he can get a better look at the window (he loves looking out the window). It is 7 in. high, 13in. long, and 17.375in. wide.

I was wondering about how steep I should build the ramp. I don't know how steep my skink would feel comfortable climbing up. I have seen him climb out of boxes, but I don't know if it would be to much of a burden for him.

So how steep should I make the ramp?

Instead of a ramp, maybe look for a nice, high piece of driftwood, or (securely) connect one or more pieces of rock or wood to create a more natural path to the platform. I'm not a huge fan of ramps, they seem to manage going up flat, inclined surfaces ok, but mine don't seem to climb down them so well. They slide more than crawl down. I think creating or using something that has footholds is a better option, and looks better, too!

If you DO decide to make a ramp, just put some kind of material on it that the bluey's fingernails can grip on.

Someone posted some pictures of their cage that had a huge ramp up to a high platform...they mentioned the skink couldn't climb up until they put some type of grip on...

There's no need for grip tape ,all you need do is cut little grooves across it for nail purchase

The guy that had the ramp said that he applied some material like fabric...(I think that maybe screen-like material) would work. Also maybe like a tough canvas material would work as well.

If you just place it directly on top of the ramp it will add some wrip.

I was the guy with the ramp. It is at a 30 degree angle and I used fiberglass screen to cover the wood. The screen is much softer than metal and super flexible. You can get it at pretty much any hardware store and it is really cheap.

Most of them have the going up part under control, it's the coming down part you have to worry about. They slide more-so than walk downwards, so you want to make sure there's a soft landing at the bottom in addition to maximising the grip on the ramp.

I'd steer clear of using something like wire or mesh or even fabric because they could get their nails caught in it. Roughed up wood would probably be the best or something that emulates the rough surface of a rock. Like glueing sand onto something (like making dioramas at school!). Would also be the most natural, too.

Why not glue/silicone bits of bark or substrate on the ramp, it'll match the set up and give natural grip.
