I use fake plants and substrate, but natural rocks, logs and wood. I change mine around when I do a tank clean, but always leave the heat rock and hide in the same place.

The best thing to do is to go to a dollar store and pick up some fake plants there; then just go wild!

We don't get carefresh here, but by all accounts it's the same thing, only ours is unbleached. It's sold here as a cat litter (but the bag does say it is great for reptiles) and it's made from recycled phone books.

This is what it looks like up close. You can see from the first shot that they burrow in it quite well.




Like Pix says, $2 shops are great for plants, ornaments and hide boxes.

I got inspired by some of jenn's recent pics and redid LittleFoot's cage. I switched him to Carefresh after he had a piece of repti-bark jammened inbetween some of his belly scales....my hubby thinks a florist shop exploded in his tank now

She doesn't have the gazebo in there at the moment as I try to change things around and give her more room to roam. She seems to like it when things change in her enclosure. She goes around exploring with this bright look on her face! I love my skink...

what would be the most naturall looking substrate that you can use for a bts?

Forest Bark looks pretty natural, but can also get caught in scales. My snake uses it, my BTS don't. Sand and dirt are dangerous due to the risk of impaction. Aspen is widey used and looks pretty good. Nothing else I know looks very natural. I use carefresh personally.

The top is covered in screen mesh that we fabricated. It's not really a big concern, but we felt more comfortable doing it anyway.

My small temporary tank is extremely minimalistic! It's 2 pieces of shoebox, a tupperware container for water, a tile to bask on, and a thing of fake plants I got free at a garage sale. Even the tank is minimalistic, it's an old fish tank with cracks in it. I puttied the cracks, put paper on the sides & back with painters tape, and made a lid from leftover screen I had. The 2 lights on it are also just $10 clamp lamps from Zellers. Even the openning for getting things in and out is just cut into the wire mesh. It's a low budget quick job, and is only going to be around for a few months, but it's working perfectly for my little silver tanny.

My tank for my other 2 is a DIY build, and will also be temporary. When I redo my tanks this one will go for sale if anyone around me wants it. It has more costly items, but works about the same. The basking area is a reptile rock tile, very rough and clay-like, raised up and angled by a cheap wood hide. The other hide is built into the tank, and therefore very hard to get the skinks out of. There's also a medium rock water dish in each, and a fake vine plant for cover. I'm not overly happy with them though they do do their job, but they'll be gone soon enough.

My tank for my snake was a fish tank turned on it's side with a reptile top on it. It's easily the best looking of my current tanks. However, once I get the new tanks build, Cow too will be getting a new home. The current one just lets the hot-end temps get too low some days. Cow is currently doing great, but I want to give her a place to bask and more room to explore. She currently has 2 rock-like hides, a large rock water dish, a wooden log, a rock, and many, many flowers. It looks great and quite natural, but I believe I can get the same look with better temps in the new tanks. Her new tank will remain very similar to her current one in looks & layout though.

Lastly, my spider, Fang, also gets a minimalistic enclosure, but her's was done during a creative moment, and I love it. She has a small betta tank for herself, less that 1/4 a cubic foot. In it she has a pringles chip lid for water, half a paper towel roll with the bottom gravel glued on, and a small rock formation of glued craft stones I got for 90 cents. Her substrate is the gravel that came with the tank, and she also has a fake plant that came with it as well. She seems very happy, and has built a huge web with water traps and funnells and several layers. Looks really good for being so cheap. She's the only one who gets to keep her tank.

I'll edit this post tomorrow (later today) with some pictures of each tank. Keep in mind that while natural looks good, so can creative work with unnatural items. Especially things like haunted houses or gazebos, which very few wild, natural blueys ever get. I cant wait to get my new tanks built so I can design far out themes for my skinkers!
