Pinkle - not so small

Postby Nature's Gift » Sat Oct 13, 2007 5:12 am

Dear BTS members,

Was going to take a few pics of Pinkle (my pink tongued skink for those that don't know). He will be about a year old in late December. He is well and truly out of brumation, which was pretty mild and short. He's started eating every day and is getting really huge.

He still has a blue tongue - dunno when that will turn pink but he is 260ml long now. OMG! Can you believe that little wiggly has turned into a skink!?

He/(she)?? is nestled in my hair atm and determined to stay and watch a bit of tv. or whatever he does in there. Had his bath today, hope he's had his evacuation EEEEK cause it didn't happen at bath time.

I'm feeding him mushed up fresh vegies (broccoli, peas, beans, carrots and rare low fat lamb - with a bit of vegie soup to wet it up). He likes it. He is not as easy to feed veggies to as Blueys - very picky. As a result I add a skink multi-vitamin/mineral supplement to the mix.

Anyways - as far as the pics, he is not being co-operative, so just an update and hopefully a few pics later.

Love to you all.
Me xxxxxxxx

Similar, I'd imagine... they are so neat, just chill out and explore... My tiny little guys try jumping off my hands and use their tail to cling to my fingers... so cute

I had a pink tongue attempt an escape tonight...

I watched in shear curiousity as one of my little guys climbed to the highest point and contort his body into some sort of yoga position as he reached out his front legs and grabbed onto the screening. He pulled himself up and spent the next 10 minutes (literally, I watched the clock) exploring the top of his cage, reaching every side (the cagetop is about 30"x12").

My cage is originally made for rats and rabbits, so the top is just straight bars about 1 inch apart, I used 1/4" screening to cover the entire thing. At the very back of the cover, there are spaces that are 1/4" wide and 1" long to allow for the top to swing open where the plastic hinges are.

It was right at those 1/4" wide openings that my little guy managed to squeeze his head and front legs out and then pull himself up and out. He actually looked like he was doing pullups, he let his rear legs drop and used his long prehensile tail as balance, and he used his front legs exclusively to pull himself entirely out of the cage. I was fascinated.

Good thing I had been there.

I have often noted how snakelike these guys are in their movements, but I never expected the level of strength and flexibility that this one demonstrated.

I scooped him up and brought him upstairs with me to show my fiance... "honey, look who wanted to come out and say hello"

He just chilled out in my hand, tail firmly wrapped around one of my fingers. Good boy.

I fashioned a cover out of tape for the gap, I can't believe that it actually was necessary. These guys are not THAT tiny that they should be able to flatten out and fit in a 1/4" wide space. But they can.

I should have taken some pictures while I had him out.

Yeah, they are little escape artists. What's funny, is they won't escape for days on end, but as soon as they do it once, they don't forget how and will do it every day thereafter....
