couple questions...

phoenix worms?? what do you think? i read a little about them and they seem great, but i wanted your opinion too.

heating- i have a basking bulb that keeps the hot side of the tank at around 100f. the problem is, when the basking bulb is on, my skink goes to the other end and acts like it's too hot. with out the light, the tank is at 80 f and he is out a lot and active. is this an ok temp to keep him at (80 f)?

I think its just the actuall basking area that needs to be that temp, I struggle to keep the cool end down at low 70's and its normally around 80, I have a time clock thats set to go off for 1/2 hr here and there, and this helps put some variation into the days temps.

Really? I was always worried when Sammy's cool side got as low as 70 degrees. It usually settles around 80 for me too. Since it's been getting colder here, the penny-pinching hubby has let me turn the heat on so I'm not so worried about the cold nights anymore. Like someone else said, I'd rather her be a little chilly at night than too hot and disrupt her sleep cycle.

The problem I had with phoenix worms are their size. Even the large ones are really small and I found I was having to give them alot and that it wasn't really worth it.

I used pheonix worms as a calcium boost every other week or so. Calcium intake is sooo important for growing babies and the more natural way I can give it to them the better. I supplement most of my meals but the days I use phoenix worms I dont need to. I definately wouldnt use them as a stable you'll be broke in no time lol. Silkies are better for that.

John, do you think they know internally, how much basking they need to do to get the right amount of D3 in thier system?

Thats a good question. Not much work has been done on d3, as lack of it is a captive phenomenon, and doesn't really occur in nature.

I know they bask to raise their body to the optimal foraging temperature, and then go back and bask when they get too cold to digest or catch prey.

It would be an interesting experiment to see if they regulate according to UV.
