BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

Last night my skink was letting me know he was hungry, but I didn’t have any greens for him so I just cut up some figs as something to keep him for a day until I could get to the store to get some. And this morning when I got up he was fine but when I got home today I saw that he was dead. I saw that he had thrown up some of the figs in the other corner, and when I picked him up I saw that there was a pile of wet stuff buy his mouth like he had thrown up something... at first I thought that maybe I didn’t cut it small enough and he choked but then I opened his mouth and I didn’t see anything in his through. So I don’t know what happened... also his eyes where really sunk in but I figure that was just an effect of the dying. Please, if anyone could help me on this I would really appreciate it

Oh man.. I'm really sorry to hear about your loss. Im not an expert, but I haven't heard of anyone feeding their skink figs. Of course, that doesn't mean that its bad, but to my limited knowledge, there is a possibility that they aren't good for them.

How old was your bluey? How big, and what was his regular diet?

These questions might help the more advanced blue tongue owners on the site answer your question better.

Russ, you must either have never read the food section of the caresheet or listen to people's food items they offer! Figs are one of the best things you can feed a bluey, and can/should be a staple in their diet whenever it is available. For shame! It is one of the few "green marked" items on the downloadable food charts.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Yeah, the sunken eyes I'm sure are from the death, that happens almost immediately. What sort of lighting and heat did he have?

I'm sorry to hear about your bluey. My guys have had figs alot. In fact when they are available, they are almost a staple.

I only did figs because the care guide says figs where good. he was 3 about 18 in. long and u usually fed him collared greens acorn squash and chicken... and sometimes blueberrys.

Very sorry about your skink. I wish you could have some closure too. Had he shown any signs of illness prior to his death? Read over the caresheet (when you feel up to it) if you plan to get another one. Wish we could help more. Vets can do necropsies (like human autopsies) to identify possible causes of death but these should be done in a timely fashion...

thank you all for you support. i will try to see if our local vet can do that autopsy for me... i just hate to think it was something i did... and no i didn't notice any signs of illness

Sorry teach.. yeah, I've looked at it, but just not memorized it. I don't see figs round here often!

I AM SO sorry for you terrible lost Its not your fault. Just think that he's happier becoming a new version of life. He'll live forever in your heart!

Sorry about your loss. Losing a pet is tough. I don't know that I'd bother with a necropsy. I wanted one done once, and it had been 24 hrs, the vet told me the insides of the lizard would be like mush.
