New carpet...

Postby mom22wins » Mon Nov 12, 2007 1:28 pm

I just recently had new carpet installed. It still has that new carpet smell. I assume that is a chemical used to make it. Should I wait until the new carpet smell subsides a bit before I let Sammy walk around on it? Just a worried mom...

I was told no by the rug installers (we had carpet put in about 6 months ago) but about 30 hours after being installed one of our younger cockatiels dropped dead, could have just been a coincidence, but i do know birds are highly suseptable to odors (teflon can kill them) I also didn't allow any critter, kids, or my hubby on the carpet for about a week because I didnt want any spills.

New carpet, furniture, mattresses and clothes ( especially baby clothes) are very often are treated with PBDE's which are chemical flame retardents . Yes, they are very harmful, (and quite un-necessary in my opinion) I believe they are a known carcinogen. PBDE's also take forever to break down in the environment. And now, because of people's fear of spontaneous combustion, (yep, everything "could" catch fire) these chemicals are pretty much everywhere, including mothers' breastmilk. I know its scary, but I would definitly NOT let your skinker or your kids on the new carpet for a while, unless you know for sure that it has not been treated with these chemicals.
Littlefoot, sorry about your poor 'Tiel!
I would also be very aware of it in buying anything new in the future. I think there are some eco friendly places you can go to buy what you need, but it may cost a little more. Better than cancer treatments down the road, I say! :D

I think the scares of PDBE's are about as silly as the fear of things spontaneously combusting. Must we live in a world where everything "gets us?" Sheesh. We've (at least in this country) extended life and hindered disease probably well past what our genetics intended us, even with a world of evil chemicals around us. Perhaps it's that in which preserves us so well! *raises glass* Here's to pretty corpses when we're 90!

Not that there isn't some validity in the situation...

...even left-over manufacturing chemical "finishers," intended to neutralize certain compounds from the manufacturing process can be harmful. While teflon itself will not cause birds to drop dead, the addition of excessive heat will release hydrocarbons and fluorochemical compounds that are toxic to birds.

I wouldn't trust such chemicals around pets on the ground, either, and would have your carpets professionally steam cleaned as soon as the manufacturer of your carpet (or the installers) say you can.

Speaking of Teflon, with some of the anodized non-stick cookware out there, which not only wears better but makes for potentially healthier situations (like when a pan is accidentally overheated) I'm not sure why it's not being phased out faster. I personally dislike teflon unless I'm making crepes or potstickers. It's an unnecessary additive to cookware if you're cooking properly.

Back to the house carpet a "mo", has anyone got information on Scotch Gaurd, its a dirt and stain repellent that you spray on furniture and carpet to protect against spills, I was going to give the house a good seeing to with it, but this thread has made me think a bit first
MMMmmmmm... Something???????

Leigh, would Scotch Guard be bad for you if you licked it? If so then i think it would probably be bad for the skinks. That's the only way I can think of it.
