BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

In my endaevour to give a mixed diet to my skinky friend, I have looked at exotic fruits in the supermarket,I came across these and didn't see them on the food chart.


top left =Giant Sharon fruit
top right =Cherimoya aka Custard Apple
bottom=2 home grown Passion fruit

Has anyone ever offered these to thier skink and does anyone know about the ratio for calcium and all that?I'm stupid to try this now because he's in the middle of shed so a positive ,he likes or not isnt possible due to lack of appetite the custard apple was nice(I tried some)it has soft almost banana flavour centre and loads of pips.

With regard to the shed, will he stay half way through until the other side of brumation, or do they shed then crash out for the winter? any advice most welcome people

Jubby went to sleep this year only half shed. It's not like he was growing while he was sleeping so it didn't bother me. I think it kind of helped, it came straight off the first time I picked him up when he woke. Ralphie went to sleep at the stage where he was all pale but hadn't actually started the peel yet.

Custard apples are nice but messy! I haven't had one for years but I'm sure my guys would love it. Sharon fruits are called persimmons here and I don't like them so that means my lizards don't either

I've given mine passionfruit if I'm having one, but it's not on the regular rotation. I think most things in moderation are ok.

Ohh, persimmons! I didn't even recognize it...

I did see them called persimmons in another shop and thought they looked the same, that'd be why then. So it doesnt matter what stage of shed they're at if/when they brumate,thanks Lisa.

Cat and dog food is as good as anything though.

Eh, while useful in a pinch, I don't use cat or dog food ever. Much better choices out there.

I really don't think cat food is as bad as many people make it out to be provided the cat food is actual quality and not just leftovers with all kinds of added disgusting goodies. I just love the Spot's Stew. Instead of a mile long list of "antidextrosemanpiegfeezeh bezoate" ingredients I've never heard of, it just has "squash, beans, peas," etc. It's just meat and vegetables and just because it's...uh oh....CAT FOOD, doesn't mean it's unhealthy. Since we live in this health conscientious age, we have these nice options. If anyone is reading, NO MORE WHISKAS!!! Ughh!

But yeah, think about it, if you're mixing up meats and vegetables and fruits...you more or less have made what would be a high quality cat food like Spot's Stew. Just add the taurine.

Leigh did you try feeding all those fruits? I was curious to hear if Blue ate them or not.

He didnt like the "custard apple", but he' only finished shedding Friday night ,so wasnt too interested in food. I put the persimmon in the mix today, so I'll post after shed and food report tomorrow. The custard apple has in my opinion, too many seeds,is too messy, and spoils quickly over night even in the fridge so more trouble than its worth,I liked it though.The Persimmon tasted like a pear from this mornings nibble, so we'll have to see how that goes.

It seems my boy is truely going into brumation, he has gone into hiding and doesnt want to be photographed(a first for him) and will only eat live feeders, my Beardie ate the persimmon ,so if thier diets are similar I reckon it'd be good to try next year when he gets his appetite back.

It's strange, mine still seem to be really active -- they usually at least show a little bit of slowing down signs by now...

cat and dog food is good in proportion

never seen those and they must not be the cheap kind of fruit =_= most rare tropical fruits here cost a bundle
