First, what photo programs do you have on your computer? Photoshop is definately great for photos, but most photo programs can be used. Tell me that, then I'll tell you how to ^.^

I just use Microsoft Office Picture Manager and it does the job. I just crop the area of the picture I want and then resize it to fit in the limit of no more than 140 pixels (if I remember correctly that is the limit). I enlarged yours, however, being I made a smaller picture larger, you dont get the clarity as if you were to make a large picture smaller. If you cant figure it out, send me your pic and I will be more than happy to do it for you.

Thanks everyone for your offers of help.
Here's the pic Zach. I can't seem to get it below 15kb, even though I decreased the longest side to 140px. I'd appeciate if you can tell me how to reduce the size so I can change the avatar.

Thanks everyone for your help and kind words about the pic.
I've got better pics but this one is an improvement on the first one.
Tattoo reduced it and sent it as a PM, so an especially big thanks to Tattoo for doing that for me.
I'd love to know how you do it!
I noticed in another thread Mom22wins asked:-
To which Zach replied:-
As I wanted to use a highly coloured image also, I had the same problem.
So can someone please tell us how they reduce the file size?

after I make my avatar pic width no greater than 140 pixels and the height no greater than 180 pixels, how do I change the file size???
To which Zach replied:-
Hmm, the quality might be too great if it's a highly colored image....send it to me!

72dpi is the standard res for web images. I have the same problem with saving jpegs in Photoshop. I end up having to save them at quality 5 or lower in order to make the 15kb limit, but then the quality of the image suffers noticeably. Another option is to save it as a gif, and limit the number of colors. By default, gifs use 256 colors. I can often set it to 150 or lower and still have a passable looking image. This method works best on images with a relatively small range of colors. Otherwise, it will look grainy.

Hey, I just found an online site where you can resize your pictures into avatars without having to purchase or download anything.
Here is the link. It worked pretty well for me.

Zach, it looks like I found a solution to my avatar problem so I won't be needing to pester you any more!

And once again a person doing a perfectly good job gets their position snatched by a computer

Woohoo!
Thanks Mom22wins! Worked a treat and soooo easy!
The only thing is that the crop options are limited.
However you can always crop and copy the original first before selecting I suppose.
