New Here...

Postby geckoguy94 » Mon Nov 26, 2007 7:48 pm

Hi, My name is Danny. I am new here, and I don't have a blue tongue skink yet, but I am hopefully getting one soon. I have been reading a lot about them for awhile and I hope to breed mine to my friend's Bluey. Can you guys post some pics of your skinks and setups? I need some ideas for my setup. I think I will be able to keep my skink in a 125 gal. tank I currently have a beardie in. Tell me a little about first getting skinks, whatever you want! Thanks!!

Hi Danny!

Good luck with getting your first BTS. My suggestions would be to read the caresheet many times, take time to go through a lot of the threads on the forum, and make sure you're ready for an animal that can live 1/4 century. There's been many thread in the past couple of months on new people, even around your age, getting ready to get a BTS. Go look those up for some great info. And once your ready, set up the tank, and call up a breeder. Once again, good luck!

I found out my friend's bluey is a male northern, so now I know what to look for. My mom said around christmas, once we get things "settled down" but you never know, I have been known to wear her down. Today she went to petco to look for anything blue tongue, whether an actual skink or a book or whatever, she wanted to see one up close. I'm glad they didn't have one, petco can make even the prettiest creature look bad. But yay, at least I know what to look for, and I know I am getting one. I'm so excited! lol is it weird to you guys that I am already thinking of names for a blue tongue I haven't even found yet? I was thinking Gwen or Punk so far... lol I know I am bad with names.

Found Her!

Postby geckoguy94 » Tue Nov 27, 2007 8:04 pm

I found the one I want, I think she is beautiful. We haven't emailed the guy yet, but hopefully we will soon and I can get some more pics...
They say she is a northern, are they correct? I just want to make sure since I am not very good with the subspecies.

What do you think of her? I'll have to email them about a specific skink, so I don't have much info other than a CB female that is 125 shipped.

I believe that "she" (not sure how they could determine sex at a young age?) is a hybrid. A Northern/Irian Jaya mix. It is a beautiful skink and I wouldnt let the hybrid part turn you away. However, I am against breeding to create hybrids, so I wouldnt recommend getting her if you plan on breeding her to your friends BTS.

These appear to be "pure" northerns, but maybe wait for others to say for sure. I would get in touch with Ben and see if they are still available.

Zach may have one Northern still available as well. maybe contact him and see if it is.

aww, man... she is pretty but I also did want to breed. Decisions Decisions. These are the others the same person has for sale. Do they all look like Hybrids? She is number 8 on this page. http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y24/Bi ... %20Skinks/

I welcomed you on another thread but welcome again!
Breeding blue tongues isn't as easy as breeding cresties, beardies, and some of the other lizards. Sexing them is a task in itself! That said, if you think you might breed them, do get a pure Northern. Petco and some of the other chains can carry pureblooded Northerns but more often I've often seen mixes there. You might be safer to get one from a forum breeder. Charlotte (my 07 Northern who is helping me type) says this is a good idea! (She is a Zach baby but Ray and Andrew probably still have a ton of babies.)
Go through the caresheet thoroughly. There are a few books out there that are informative but not geared towards caretaking. If you have questions, fire away!!! And, pictures are always welcome. They are actually required when you get your new bluey!!!! (Well, they would be if we could enforce this! )

You did? This is my only thread. Anyway, if I could get two blue tongues, I would get her and one to breed. The person I am getting my german giant (who is coming tomorrow!) from has friends with bluetongues, so she said she would check into that for us. I am really excited! I just got a 4' by 2' by 2' cage for only $40!! It's really nice, it is sealed and is wood with a plexi-glass front. It is really pretty. I am also getting 5 custom cages that are 4' by 2' by 19'', and they are ready today! My parents said they are going up to get them Friday. I'm really happy. LOL would you guys mind if I post pics of my new dragon on here, I mean, she is no bluey, but she is just as good.
