trim to the quick. Be careful not to cut the quick, but if you do, dab some flour or talc on it to stop the bleeding. It won't pee out with blood, and it will stop by itself fairly quickly, but just something you can do to help it stop quicker. I don't bother.

If your new to trimming, nipping just the tip every once in a while will keep the nail from killing you, without having to worry about the quick. Otherwise you are able to cut up to the quick... What Blotch said.

It's a good idea to disinfect the clippers since it can make momentary contact with the bloodstream -- if you aren't too experienced or comfortable clipping nails, begin with clipping just the tips -- when you get a system down, clip a little more. But there's really no point to cut the entire nail -- I usually cut half. The longer the nail however, the longer the quick, that is, you could cut half the length of a long nail and it could still bleed.
I remember when we got Niko, his nails were VERY long. I cut about half off and it bled pretty bad.
P.S: Never neglect your skink's nails and let them get this long.

I had an Idea for cutting R.B.'s nails the other day and I was wondering if anyone has tried this. The Idea was to use the mesh top of his enclosure. Have him on top of it so his nails would go through the mesh and cut them from underneath. Anyone think this would work? He's just very sensitive when I touch his legs or feet. He makes that always so scary hiss noise.
My BTS can read. (I think)

I was worried about trimming Sammy's nails so I did the next best thing, I filed them with any emery board!
Just run the emery board under the nails in one direction from underneath (from back to front the way they would normally wear them down on rocks) as you or someone else holds him. She seems to put up with this alot better than when I tried to trim them.
