Bella not eating veggies

Postby russman » Tue Dec 11, 2007 3:38 pm

Hey all.. I've been sorta absent lately because I haven't had a bluey at my place to take care of, but now that my fiance is moving out of her apartment, Bella has come to my place to stay.

Anyway, she has been a pain in the butt to feed because she won't eat her veggies! She picks out the boiled chicken/boiled hamburger that I put in her veggies. She will eat meat out of my hand, but not veggies. In the past, she has eaten yellow squash, butternut squash, tomatoes just fine, but she's getting more picky or something.

It might have to do with me switching from predominately cat food as a meat to a solid meat source.. or maybe brumation/ time of year stuff. What do you all think?

Buy a cheap chopper, and make a mash. Don't give them the option of picking through it.

Yeah I have a chopper.. in the past she has seemed to prefer big chunks, but I am planning on chopping the food again to see if it helps. Thanks for the suggestion!

Could be lack of interest due to brunation. Tattoo used to eat everything in site then things slowly fell away. Now it's about a raspberry a week and lots of sleep. Funny little buggers.

Did you remind her that there are skinks starving over in Australia that would love to have her veggies?

chop the vegies in the blender thingy so it's like a paste and mix that into the meat. This way it's like a sauce on the meat and she gets it whether she likes it or not. Keep the meat chunky, puree the vegies!

When LittleFoot gets picky, I just stir in a little meat baby food. I dont finely chop his veggies, i leave everything in bite sized chunks. The extra coating just gives him a little extra insentive to eat all the good stuff.

I think I recently read on one of the threads that they seem to want more protein and less veg when they get closer to brumating. I would wait until she's hungry, then feed her the veg stuff first, meat last. Or even having meat flavor/oil on the veg might help. My guy is defintely more picky and has much less appetite now its darker and colder these days.

I was deciding whether to post that or something along the lines of veggies putting hair on your chest, but the realized we were talking about a skink with a female name. So that wouldnt have worked too well.

I don't know as if it's brumation stuff since she's so darned active. We just moved her into her new permanent cage (the old converted dresser if you remember) and she has been on and under every log and all over.

I caught her this morning sprawled out on the basking rock sleeping. It was so cute.. I gotta get a picture next time.

Ok, just tried chopping the food, meat and all.. she wasn't interested. I shoved her nose in and she struggled, but took a bite. Then she gave up and wouldn't take anymore bites even after having her nose shoved in again.

I know she likes pinky mice and she hasn't had one in a month or so, so I ran to the pet store real quick just to try an experiment and I picked one up. She killed it because it was bothering her, but wouldn't eat it.

I'm considering brumating her.

Blueys are instinctual animals. I find that Bluey (yeah that is my Eastern's name) goes on and off foods.

There may be something that your bluetongue is craving for some reason, maybe stocking up on proteins and fats prior to brumation.

Hey Russman, remember, 'tis the season when their appetites do weird stuff as well. Remember, these guys can go months without food, unlike us silly inefficient warm-blooded animals. It doesn't necessarily mean they should go that long, but just that they can and do.
Give her a week or two to build back an appetite, then try again. Just make sure she always has fresh water and you should be good to go!

Im not worried about her.. she's tough. Just my first winter, that's all. I just don't get the whole internal clock thing - her temps are the same as they always have.. hmm.
