Off Topic Thread: Brand New Baby Corucia!

Postby Celeste » Tue Dec 18, 2007 3:39 pm

Sorry, folks -- I can't resist posting this. I got an early Christmas present last night:

Image

Not the greatest picture, but the little one didn't sit still for very long, and I haven't been able to get any more because both of the females in that trio are being very protective of the new baby. Hopefully, things will settle down a bit over the next few days so I can get a weight on the little guy/gal and figure out what gender he/she is.

That's mommy in the back of the picture.

These are the northern subspecies, Corucia zebrata alfredschmidti.

Woo hoo!!!!!

(Hopefully, the shinglebacks are paying attention!) ;->

Awwww ... babies are so cute.  What a great Christmas present for you. Was that the very pregnant mommy you posted pictures of before? She sure did look like she needed to let loose.

Beautiful baby! Poor mamma looks so exhausted. What a huge kid to poop out ^.^ I'm going to have to visit California and see Andrew and you. Seems like Cali is doing great with the skinkers! Shingles and blotchies and centrals and all manner of BTS, and Prehensile-Tails too. Congrats on your new baby! You got a name for it yet?

Hmm, I kept scrolling up while typing to look at the picture, and i Just noticed the fact there there's a 3rd tail there. Looks somewhat surreal. :D

Mystery tail

Postby Celeste » Tue Dec 18, 2007 11:15 pm

The third tail was the other female's. That group consists of my elderly male Cza, Shiva, and two young female hotties I acquired in March (Sita and Sundar). (And baby now makes four). I want to figure out the baby's gender before coming up with a good name. I'm thinking a female, just from its coloration, and its pattern looks just like its mom's. I'm *hoping* female, because the last Cza baby I had was two years ago -- that was my *first* baby as well -- and that one was a male. That male baby I named Arjuna (after the character in the Mahabarata), and he was the offspring of Shiva and Shakti (a very elderly female, who I still have, but I think is well past her breeding years). I'll need to get the new baby out and get a good look at its vent area to [possibly] tell.

No, the mother is not the very pregnant female you saw in the other pictures -- that very pregnant female was Lakshmi, one of my Corucia zebrata zebrata (southern subspecies). Sorry for all the confusion. All the ones in those other photos are Czz's.

Actually, as far as handling goes, most of the babies that have been born here at my house have been handled (a little bit, once in a while) from birth, so they are not nearly as skittish or aggressive as those that haven't been. It seems to make a difference.

Gotta run -- it's late and I have yet to feed the Corucia. (And I suppose the cat will want to be fed, too!) ;-)

Oh, I forgot to mention: the babies have that sort of muddy "bark camoflage" coloration, and change to their adult colors after a year or two. So he/she will be much prettier then.
