Temperatures?

Postby rachel » Wed Dec 26, 2007 2:18 am

Everyone seems to say different, would you guys mind giving me an idea of what sort of temperatures you keep your BTS in (I have Easterns). Also my guy doesn't seem to slow down in the cooler months of the year-is this just because i am here in the hot queensland temps or something else? :noknow:

A Blue-tongues preferred body temperature (PBT) is +/- 32 degrees. This is the point at which they will be active and consuming food.

What you need in your enclosure is an area that allows your bluey to reach that body temp and also an area which allows your bluey to cool down if he wishes to do so. This is known as a "temperature gradient".

Yes. Living in QLD your bluey may not slow down at all. But if you observe closely you may be able to detect changes in behaviour (less active/ less food consumed that sort of stuff) in different months. You're bluey may not brumate but during the very hot months he might eastivate. (A period of torpor during hot weather).

I use a basking spot of about 110, with areas of 105, 100, 95, and 85 available on the warm side. My cool side gets to room temperature, which is between 65 and 75.

I use a basking spot of 95F, 100 max. Any higher, and a temperature fluctuation could send the basking side souring to unsafe temperatures (that is, if you kept it at 100, a fluctuation could send it up to 110 which is ok, if you kept it at 110, a fluctuation could send it up to 120 which is unsafe). He can always move, yes, but I've seen more than a few burnt bts critters because of enclosures that became too hot unexpectedly.

Just my two cents -- I know Nomad and I have talked about it before, so no worries. ;)

+ 2.2 Irian Jaya (Slurpy, Nona, Sassy, Cool Moe Dee)
+ 1.1 Eastern (Eugene, Enzo)
+ 1.2 Northern (Niko, Pearl, Peach)
+ 1.0 Tanimbar Island (TQ)

i have my easterns in an outdoor encloser and they seem to really benifit from it such as they act more as the would in the wild and somtimes they have even breed. its also less work you dont have to adjust temps exept in heavy rain i somtimes bring them in side to prevent a rpi so if your in aus i would definatley recomend an oudoors encloser. :)

My basking spot's hottest, probably about 2-3 inches across, is at 107'F. The mass area is about 101'F overall. The cool side is usually about 70'F.
