Surfs up

Postby evil pixie » Sat Jan 05, 2008 8:03 pm

Here in Michigan we are in the midsts of a blistering heat wave; temperatures are reaching a steaming 45-50F. We can all rejoice and see the grass and sidewalks again. Going outdoors and talking the neighbours no longer requires a 2-hour prep, and taking the dog for a walk is pleasantly enjoyable. All this heat has caused my skinks to wake up, and see what the world looks like after a month sleep.

Blue decided the best way to stave off the heat was by surfin' on his log.

Does anyone have experience with dry belly scales on their skink? I think it might be the wood chips, since he doesn't get that on the carefresh. I like to change it up to keep it interesting for him, and I do enjoy the cedar-rific smell, but if that is the culprits behind his dry belly scales...

Say, Razputin, what do you think of these balmy temps?

*Severus kindly asks for forgiveness in using this old picture. He is shedding, and looking rather ragged at the moment. He promises new pictures once he is looking fabulous again; if you have issue with this, you can take it up with him directly.

This is probably the only one sadden by the melting of the snow; never mind she has to bundle up whenever she goes out because her hair is so thin. I thought she looked like a Jedi master in the robe, hence the light saber - please forgive my geeky-nerdiness.

Great pictures! We're getting warmth too, over -15! :woo: Severus is awesome.

Did you say you're using cedar wood? Pine/Cedar fumes can be harmful to reptiles.

It's aspen, not cedar. It has a cedar-y woody smell to it though, but it is shaved aspen.

Great pics! Blue is beautiful as well as everyone else. Does blue have a pink tint to him or is that just the picture?

Mine got the dry belly scales when the weather changed and the forced air heating came on. I have been keeping a humid hide in the tank at all times, and he's been using it, and it has helped a lot. (Also using Carefresh.)

Blue does look really pink!! It takes a confident man to rock pink. 8)

In the wild, skinks always have the option for higher humidity, by burrowing etc. I would add a humid hide.

Eh, I'd have one available for shedding, but I think it's lower priority to other details.

What else do you think is causing the dry scales?
