Blue looks weird

Postby Brigget » Mon Jan 07, 2008 3:50 pm

I got blue out last night. I dont get him out daily because he is sleeping alot, he looked funny around his face and of course i noticed ear bags which i soaked him and helped get them out. after cleaning him up he looked better and of course he loved me getting out the ear plugs he closed his eyes. but anyways he had spit that came out when he flicked his tongue not alot but it wasnt normal for him. I have seen lilly do it but not him. I dont know maybe he was just tired and dirty from being under his bark but it made me worry a little bit.

During brumation, a build up of saliva is normal -- you should see Eugene drool! He's drooling, he's drooling, he's drooling down the river! He leaves little puddles.

I'm glad Zach said that. BTW, what did you use to get the earbags out?

Mel is a drool bag at all times of year. He especially drools when he is a little nervous. You should have seen him salivate around the first grade class.

Ever hear of those pets who start to look like their owners over time?

I drool too around first graders. They go good on toast.

Fatal ... first graders are much too smelly and dirty to put on toast. You gotta get them when they are babies so they smell nice and don't crawl around in the dirt at recess.

When my guys have plugs, I remove all the shed around the ear, leaving just a few scales right outside the hole. Seems to come out easy that way, nothing holding it back. Even Trikks will sit still and behave when I'm working on the earplug. He knows.

Bluey's shed their skin and along with it they shed ear bags that most of us never see.

Look in the Care Sheet on this site. There are pictures of ear bags.

They're harder to set up, but 110% worth it!

When a skink sheds, they shed all the scales, including the ones inside the ear holes. Each shed the replace their ear bag, which is an airbag of shed used to prevent dirt and stuff from getting into the ear. When shedding, the earbag usually just comes out. However, some of us like to remove it ourselves. This can be dangerous if you don't know what your doing or you're not careful.
1) If you look into the ear, you will see the earbag. This is supposed to be there. When they shed, the old bag comes out, there is again a new one inside. This confused me, I thought mine weren't shedding their bags.
2)Don't go into the ear, if removing a bag, pull at the shed scales around the ear. BTS can shake their heads rapidly without warning, this could cause major damage if you try sticking anything inside.
3)BTS are usually very good at getting these out on their own, so you probably wont have to. BTS will scratch at their ear with the hind leg to get it out. If you see this lasting a few days, the bag may be stuck, then you can try to remove it.

DONT GO WORRYING ABOUT THEM,they have been known to not come out the ear hole on a few skinks at shed time, that said, dont go digging around in there for NO NEED, they arent a big issue for most.

When it is shed it is literally a little bag of air made of scale shed.
