New Cage for my BTS

Postby Thehurricane22 » Tue Jan 08, 2008 8:54 pm

So me and my dad built the new cage for my BTS...who i haven't named yet, but its 4 ft long 19 1/2 inch wide and 15 inch tall. I will upload some pics tomorrow prolly or the next day when i switch him into it and get it all ready for him. Also, I remember one of u guys saying wait a few days to handle him since he is prolly stressed out and scared. He ate a little bit of cat food today, and I pet him a little bit and he calms right down. Do u think its ok that after tomorrow once he gets settled in to his new tank I should start taking him out? The care sheet says to handle and how....just dont wanna do too early while he is all scared and *ticked off :-P. Thanks again guys, and ill be sure to upload some pics as soon as i get it set up.

Can't wait to see pics of the set-up and you bluey!!

As for handling, I'm don't have a lot of experience with BTS (just with my own little one, but she has been handled since birth, so isn't scared at all) but I would think a lot of that would depend on him. If he is really scared and hiding then give him a bit more time, but if he doesn't seem too stressed then you probably can handle him in a day or two after moving.

Any idea how old he is? Was he handled much before? What species?

Definitely post pics soon, and hopefully someone with experience taming skittish skinks will chime in soon! Sounds like his new terrarium is nice and roomy - he's lucky to have found such a good home!! :)

I'd say once you move him into his new tank, give him at least 2 days, and if he seems content and settled in, go ahead and handle him. Keep in mind that all BTS are cranky if you wake them up, so try to find a time when he's active and bring him out. If he's cool, cuddle him. If he's warm, let him explore.

Many skinks come to enjoy leaving their tanks and exploring, and will scratch at the tank to get out. Pryce always wants out right before bed -.-' But if your skink seems settled and curious, go ahead and share some cuddle time. I found it so hard to wait to handle Pryce ^.^

If he's happy to see you and doesn't protest about his new owner and surroundings, handle him when ever you like. Be sure to not let him get too cold though.
