home made enclosures

Postby zakkhogan » Wed Jan 09, 2008 4:59 am

I am in the mits of rearanging my living room, and have decided to make my own enclosure that will be incorpated in to the new furniture/units!

is there any meterial that i should avoid.

The main unit's will be mdf and thinking of using half inch think perspex in place of glass.... the main reason for the perspex is it's avalable to me at no cost (due to family connections)

It will be a front opening unit, due to storage above,

should i use a lino or a form of sealant to protect the wood base from spilt water and skink wee

And also what effect will my stereo have on lynyrd... it dosnt get used often but when it does i imagine that the vibrations + noise could unsettle him?

Woods to avoid - Pine and Cedar. They have odors/fumes that may harm your animal. Avoid these as shavings too.

Front opening is good for BTS, they can get scared if you come at them from above like a bird.

I don't know anything about perspex, but I hope it's resistant to scratching.

I used caulking to seal the joint in my DIY tank. I'm no expert though. I'm getting an experienced hand for my 10 tank project coming up.

Your stereo should be no problem unless you are blasting the music. Some background noise is good for them to get them used to sounds. If things are walking off the tables because your music lives at a high volume ... bad for bluey in my opinion.

We built ours out of MDF and it turned out great. We lined the inside with contact paper....like the kind you would line kitchen drawers with. It seems to be holding up well again the water and pee :) Good luck!

Are you thinking due to the look for the glass if its scratch's or some type of oder or chemical the could be in the perspex?

BTS tend to claw at the see-through/glass parts of their tanks. There are some plastics and other material people have used that end up becoming very marked up. Try to use something scratch resistant.

If its easy enough to come by,no worries if it gets scratched(there's no odour to it) you can seal the MDF with wood stain or varnish for water resistance, and I'd seal all the internal joins with silicone. It stops draughts makes it stronger and stops little claws getting caught.Post some piccys when you've finished mate.

interia???

Postby zakkhogan » Fri Jan 11, 2008 6:47 am

My oi' man has just let me know that the plans or designed for the tank/units so fingers crossed that its gonna happen soon...

Also im think for the interia a mixture of different terrains...

I currently use wood chippings, which im gonna carry on getting but im wonder if there is a gravel or out side effect Ie paving slab that has stone and grit etc...

would small stone be to shap or dangours?
