is the light bulb sitting on the wood? If so, that may be a fire hazard. Also, do you have a temp of the hot side? With a 55 gallon tank, the light is pretty high up and unless you are using a high wattage bulb, the temp might not be getting warm enough on the warm side.

Yes the light is sitting on the wood. But the bulb is in a dome thingy. My water dragon used to be in that cage for about 1 year (or 2) with the light on the wood .. so yeah.

The wattage of the bulb is around 75? I think ... but the slat stays nice and warm. (Not so warm to burn him) So the temp is okay. :)

Anyone else going to comment about How Hershal look and his cage?

how warm is warm? Do you have a temp gun or other thermometer to determine what the temp is?

Well the people on repticzone.com said that the slat is perfect temp if when you touch the stal it is warm to your touch .. I am usure of the temp on the hot side .. I have to get one of those things you are talking about ..

What is the silver stuff that your skink is in? Hershal is a nice looking skink!
I think you definitely need to get a temp gun so you can get accurate readings on the warm and cool side of his cage.
The other very most important thing you will need is a good reptile vet to give regular check ups as well as for if something goes wrong/Hershal gets sick. (His mouth rot!!!!)
Try www.herpvetconnection.com and scroll to the bottom and enter your state. You should be able to find a good vet there.
That mouth rot definitely needs to be treated ASAP.
Try drier foods for a while. Check out the caresheet on this site for info!
Good luck with Hershal, he's a cutie!

Oh hey Reptile_Dude! I am glad you have an account on here!! :)

What are you talking about ... my bed spread? Well, my bed spead feels like soft moss .. Cool!!

That silvery stuff is my bed speard on my bed ... I know .. it looks like moss! It is cool in person!

The pet store gave me some mouth rot stuff, and that has been helping out with his mouth rot. His mouth rot used to worse .. but it is clearing up queit well!

We have found an reptile vet a few min away from use ... he manly deals with cats and dosg .. but he said he does deal with reptiles! So that is a plus that he is only right down the road!! :)

So 2 people I already know .. Mangodude and Reptile_Dude!! :) Yay! :ohyes: :ohyes: :ohyes: :)

Hershal looks good. Welcome to the forum. There's already great advice on this page, so I wont keep repeating it. That bed spread is neat, looks comfy, especially with a skinker tucked in.

My silver tanny was $110, my yellow tanny was $250, and my northern was $200

I agree with Renee about the light being on the wood.... :chin: Funny thing about that, it seems safe and ok until something bad actually happens!

And good job, I'd definitely buy a temp gun so you can be sure your BT has the proper temps. Feeling the rock with your hand works ok temporarily, but it's important to know precise temperatures in the long haul.

Good luck!

And with the wood, it seems like a waste of energy to me if the heat is having to go through the wood.

Here's a link for an affordable temp gun (same one I and a lot of people on here have):
http://www.proexotics.com/store/product ... 248&page=1

So is there a hole cut in the wood slightly smaller than the diameter of the dome, so the dome can just rest on top? I wonder if you couldn't widen the hole to slightly larger than the dome, then affix wire mesh across the opening, then set the dome on top of that to reduce the fire hazard. Or just get a screen top. It's also recommended that you get a UVB light if you're unable to take your skink outside a lot.

I would add 2-3inches of substrate, a long UVB tube and raise the basking spot on stilts/legs,so he can go on or under it, looking good your little fella though.
